PHILADELPHIA – The University of Dayton softball team (37-12, 20-2 A-10) finished the regular season with a 3-1 win over La Salle (13-20, 9-11 A-10) Sunday, sweeping the Explorers in the Atlantic 10, three-game series at West Campus Field.  The Flyers clinched their first regular season Atlantic 10 title in program history, and also broke the school record for wins in a season with 36 by taking both games in the doubleheader the day before.Â
Dayton has swept six of the eight conference series its played this year.
Senior
Kayla English earned the win on the mound, her 18th this season and 54th of her career, just one away from tying the UD record. She struck out three in 3.1 innings of work. Freshman
Manda Cash came in for her NCAA-leading ninth save of the season, striking out five and allowing no hits in 3.2 innings of work.
UD struck first in the second inning when freshmen
Kayla Haberstich and
Kailee Budicin scored on an error by the center fielder after sophomore
Katie Ryan put the ball in play. The Explorers scored their lone run in the bottom of the second but that's as close as they would get.
Freshman
Jaclyn Kweder provided an RBI double in the fourth to score
Hannah DeSalvo for a 3-1 lead.
Budicin, who notched a double, and senior
Natalie Mariano both had multi-hit days for the Flyers.
Dayton will be the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship in Amherst, Mass. May 6-9.
