TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
Scoochie Smith scored 20 points and
Charles Cooke added a double-double as the Dayton Flyers earned a hard fought 77-72 win against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Josh Cunningham added 12 points, but injured his left leg in the closing seconds of the ball game.
Ryan Mikesell added 12 points and five rebounds, while
Sam Miller chipped in seven.
Dayton improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Crimson Tide fell to 1-1 overall.
GAME BREAKDOWN
- Dayton trailed 36-31 at halftime, but kept creeping back into the contest.
- Cooke hit a layup to give the Flyers their first lead of the second half, 54-53 with 7:08 to play.
- Alabama regained the lead 64-63 on a layup with 2:@8 to go. The Flyers went on a 4-0 run thanks to a Cooke free throw and three by Mikesell to regain the lead.
- Smith then hit a layup with 47 seconds to go to help keep the lead at three, 70-67.
- Cunningham's slam on a fast break with five seconds to play was the last basket. He was fouled but left the game in the arms of two trainers. He landed awkwardly after the dunk.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dayton has won 14 of the last 17, including five straight, versus SEC opponents.
- UD is 31-12 in the last nine years against the power five programs.
- The Flyers defense was strong limited the Crimson Tide to 6 of 23 from three-point range (26 percent).
- On the other side, Dayton shot 9 of 18 from beyond the arc.
- UD was out-rebounded 48-28 and allowed 18 Alabama offensive rebounds.
