STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORT LIFTS DAYTON PAST NEW MEXICO, 64-57






ANAHEIM - Seniors Charles Cooke, Scoochie Smith and Kyle Davis each scored 12 points as the Dayton Flyers used a strong defensive effort to beat the New Mexico Lobos, 64-57, in the fifth place game of the Wooden Legacy.

Xeyrius Williams added nine points and Ryan Mikesell scored seven as the Flyers won their second straight and improved to 4-2 on the season.

GAME BREAKDOWN
  • UD scored eight straight points in the last 45 seconds to beat the Lobos. The Flyers trailed once all day. Tim Williams scored on a layup with 1:08 left to give the Lobos a one-point lead. Charles Cooke hit two free throws on Dayton's next possession.
  • Two turnovers by New Mexico in the final seconds led to baskets by the UD. Davis punctuated the victory with a dunk at the end.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Flyers are 35-1 when limiting opponents to 60 points or less in the last five seasons.
  • UD held the Lobos to 48 points less than they scored in the previous game.  Friday's 105 points set a Wooden Legacy tournament record.
  • Dayton forced 16 New Mexico turnovers and limited the Lobos to only four second chance points.
  • The Flyers have won 12 of their last 14 when Kyle Davis scores in double figures.
  • Davis and Cooke each had three steals as Dayton finished with seven as a team. The seven steals tied a season high.
  • Cooke and Smith both have scored in double figures in every game this season.
  • In the three games at the Wooden Legacy, Davis averaged 11.0 points per game while shooting 12 of 20 (.600) from the floor.
  • In six exempt tournaments, Archie Miller's teams are 13-5.
