FLYERS CLINCH SPOT IN A-10 TOURNAMENT

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton men's soccer team finished out the regular season Saturday on the road with a 3-2 overtime win over VCU after Alvaro Navarro's game-winning goal in the 97th minute.

The Flyers (7-8-3, 3-3-2 A-10) battled the Rams (6-9-3, 4-3-1 A-10) for 97 hard-fought minutes Saturday night in Richmond with tournament implications on the line.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • 4th Minute – Dayton 1, VCU 0 – The Flyers opened the scoring early with a goal by sophomore Kennedy Nwabia off a cross from junior Dillon Nino.
  • 38th Minute – Dayton 1, VCU 1 – The Rams evened the score a half hour later when Francesco Amorosino scored a on a scramble in front of goal.
  • 44th Minute – Dayton 1, VCU 2 – A corner kick for VCU fell to Brandon Eaton just in front of goal for an easy poke home to give the host Rams the lead.
  • 70th Minute – Dayton 2, VCU 2 – Junior Alvaro Navarro struck it from 16 yards out to tie the game up at 2-2. Senior Rafael Gamboa provided the assist.
  • 97th Minute – Dayton 3, VCU 2 – Navarro finished the brace with the game-winner in the 97th minute on the assist by senior Ben Emery.

KEY STATS
  • Nwabia scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season while Nino recorded his first assist.
  • Navarro picked up his second and third goals of the year with Gamboa and Emery adding their first assists.
  • The Flyers were out-shot in the game 20-12, but put nine on goal compared to the Rams' seven.
  • Dayton was not called offside in the contest while VCU had five offside calls.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Federico Barrios had five saves in all 97 minutes between the posts.
  • Navarro led UD with five shots while freshman Rok Taneski chipped in four shots.

UP NEXT
  • With 11 points, the Flyers tied for the final spot in the A-10 Tournament with George Washington. It was decided on tiebreakers and the league office announced Dayton would travel to Davidson, N.C. for the tournament.
