DAYTON BOWS OUT OF WNIT WITH 89-72 LOSS AT WESTERN KENTUCKY

Grant-Allen and Layfield Each Post Double-Doubles

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team ended its 2015-16 season at Western Kentucky Thursday night with an 89-72 loss in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Flyers end the year with a 14-15 record while the Lady Toppers improve to 25-6.

GAME BREAKDOWN
• 1Q: Western Kentucky started strong, pulling ahead six t 11-5 in the early going of the first quarter. Back-to-back three-point baskets from freshman Maddy Dennis evened the score at 15 points apiece. The Lady Toppers pulled ahead again, 20-16, but the Flyers scored the last five points of the frame to take a 21-20 advantage.
• 2Q: A 4-0 spurt by the Lady Toppers to open the second quarter gave the home team back the lead at 24-21. Back-to-back made free throws by WKU's Kendall Noble set the score at 34-30 in favor of Western Kentucky with just over three minutes to play in the half. UD tied it at 34-all but WKU went into the locker room with a four-point, 40-36 lead.
• 3Q: Burdette scored the Flyers' first eight points of the third period to put Dayton ahead four, 44-40. A quick 5-0 run by Western Kentucky turned the tables to put the Lady Toppers back in front, 47-45. At the end of the third, WKU was ahead six, 56-50.
• 4Q: It was all Western Kentucky in the fourth quarter as the Lady Toppers pulled away from the Flyers. WKU led by as many as 19 before a late UD rally cut it to 10, 77-67. Free throws down the stretch sealed the win for Western Kentucky and the Lady Toppers advance with the 89-72 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Junior Saicha Grant-Allen (15p-13r) and sophomore JaVonna Layfield (14p-12r) each recorded double-doubles for the Flyers
• Sophomore Jenna Burdette led the Flyers with 19 points to go with six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
• Western Kentucky was led by Noble with a game-high 27 points, one of four Lady Toppers in double-figures scoring.

KEY STATS
• Dayton out-rebounded Western Kentucky, 43-31, but the Flyers turned over the ball 20 times to the Lady Toppers' 11.
• UD went 14-for-20 from the free-throw line while WKU made 31 of its 36 attempts from the stripe.
