DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team kicked off its week of competition with a double header sweep of Morehead State on Tuesday evening, winning by scores of 4-3 and 1-0 at UD Softball Stadium.
GAME ONE – Dayton 4 Morehead State 3
Scoring Breakdown
Top 1st – Morehead State broke open the scoring with an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead in the first.
Bottom 1st – Dayton bounced right back with an unearned run of its own, as sophomore Kailee Budicin scored from first on a single by freshman Lisa Tassi, tying the score 1-1.
Top 3rd – MSU came back by scoring another unearned run, taking a 2-1 lead.
Bottom 3rd - UD battled back to take a lead of its own, with Tassi bringing home fellow rookie Aspyn Novak and freshman Madi Maloof driving home senior Kathryn Hess to give the Flyers a 3-1 advantage.
Top 4th – The Eagles pulled even with a solo home run to tie the game, 3-3.
Bottom 6th – Dayton scored the deciding run on a groundout by sophomore Kayla Haberstich that scored senior Krista Gustafson and gave UD a lead for good at 4-3.
Key Stats
The cleanup spot of the order went 3-for-3 in the game, with Tassi going 2-for-2 and sophomore Jaclyn Kweder turning in a 1-for-1 performance as a pinch hitter.
Maloof's RBI was the first of her young career.
Gustafson finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Senior Emily Froment picked up her first win of the season by pitching three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Junior Gabrielle Snyder started the game in the circle for the Flyers, surrendering just one earned run over four innings, striking out a career-high seven batters.
GAME TWO – Dayton 1 Morehead State 0
Scoring Breakdown
Bottom 7th – With runners at the corners and one away, freshman Kayla Laquiere drove home pinch runner Kirsten Bartlett to give the Flyers a walk-off, 1-0 victory.
Key Stats
Game Two of the double header was highlighted by freshman Jessica Giliam's superb outing in the circle.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Gilliam tossed the complete game for Dayton, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-best seven hitters.
