DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team kicked off the weekend with a double header sweep of La Salle on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 6-0 and taking game two 2-1 at UD Softball Stadium.
GAME ONE – DAYTON 6 LA SALLE 0Scoring BreakdownBottom 1st – Dayton broke the scoring open in the first inning thanks to back-to-back, two-out doubles by
Gabrielle Snyder and
Krista Gustafson, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
Bottom 3rd – UD doubled its lead to 2-0 thanks to a Snyder sacrifice fly that scored junior
Hannah DeSalvo.
Bottom 5th – The Flyers tacked on another run when sophomore
Kayla Haberstich drove home senior
Kennedy Haynes with a single, making it 3-0 Dayton.
Bottom 5th – Dayton tacked on two more on an intentional ball gone awry, as a wild pitch brought home pinch runner
Kelly Fitzgerald from third, and an error following the play by the catcher allowed DeSalvo to score from second. When the dust settled, the Flyers led 5-0.
Bottom 5th – To cap off the scoring for UD, Gustafson and freshman
Aspyn Novak executed a first-and-third double steal to perfection, bringing the Flyers to the final score of 6-0.
Key StatsFour players had multi-hit games for Dayton in the opener, with Snyder and Gustafson joined by
Kailee Budicin and
Kayla Haberstich. All four Flyers had two hits.
Snyder collected another double, inching her closer to the Dayton all-time record. The junior now needs seven more to break Kathleen Maloof's record of 43.
Sophomore
Manda Cash dealt five scoreless innings to pick up her sixth win of the season. The Columbus, Ohio native allowed just one hit and struck out six.
GAME TWO – DAYTON 2 LA SALLE 1Scoring BreakdownTop 5th – The lone run of the game for La Salle game thanks to an Emma Schweigert solo home run that gave the Explorers a brief 1-0 lead.
Bottom 5th – Dayton tied up the game on a bases-loaded fielder's choice off the bat of
Krista Gustafson that brought home
Aspyn Novak that knotted the score at 1-1.
Bottom 5th – With runners and second and third and two away, sophomore
Kailee Budicin came through with a clutch RBI single that brought home the game-winning run and put the Flyers ahead 2-1.

Jessica Gilliam picked up the win to move to 6-6 on the season.
Junior
Gabrielle Snyder came out of the bullpen to throw the final two innings and pick up her first save of the season.
Freshman
Kyle Davidson went 2-for-3 at the plate, knocking two singles out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order.
Dayton had two hitters walked intentionally (Snyder and
Katelyn Gibson) for the first time in a single game all season.
