BRONX, N.Y. –
Kendall Pollard scored a season-high 25 points and reached the 1,000 career point mark as the Dayton Flyers pulled away in the second half for a 75-66 win over the Fordham Rams.
Charles Cooke tallied 14 points and five assists, while
Scoochie Smith in his homecoming to the Bronx added 10 points and six assists.
Darrell Davis also added nine points thanks to three 3-point field goals.
Pollard became the 47th Flyer to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The Flyers are back in first place in the Atlantic 10 at 7-2.
TOP TREND OF THE GAME
- Dayton (16-5, 7-2) ended the game on a 16-6 run, overcoming a tremendous shooting night by Fordham, which made 9 of 17 3-pointers in the first half but only 2 of 8 in the second half.
FIRST HALF – Dayton 39, Fordham 39
- The Flyers got a spark offensively from Pollard who scored 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field.
- Fordham closed the opening 20 minutes on a 9-0 run.
- The Rams shot 9 of 17 from three-point range and forced 11 Flyer turnovers, matching UD's first half high on the year.
- UD had 10 assists from seven different players. Dayton shot 13 of 21 from the field.
SECOND HALF – Dayton 75, Fordham 66
- The Flyers closed the game on a 10-2 run.
- Fordham had its largest lead of the game at 58-53 with 11:34 remaining. However, the Rams went cold missing seven of its next eight field goals. That allowed UD to regain the lead, 61-60 with five minutes to go.
- The Bronx native Smith made some big plays in the final minutes. He assisted Xeyrius Williams on the go-ahead layup with 5:26 to play. He assisted Cooke on a basket to give UD a 64-68 lead with 2:52 to play. Smith made a jump shot with 2:02 to play to give the Flyers a 70-64 lead.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dayton has now won 13 straight and 19 of the last 20 meetings against Fordham.
- The Flyers shot 23 of 44 (52 percent) from the floor. UD improved its record to 15-1 this year when connecting on 40 percent or better from the field.
- Cooke continues to produce offensively. He's scored in double figures in all but one game this year.
- Fordham shot 11 of 25 from beyond the arc. In the past three contests, opponents shot 10 of 75 (.133) from three-point range.
- The Flyers dominated at the free throw line going 23 of 27, while the Rams made 5 of 9 foul shots.
- Dayton is 15-0 this season when leading with five minutes left in regulation.
