#UDWBB Crushes MVSU In New Orleans Shootout Finale

The Flyers Had 21 Assists on 25 Field Goals In The Win

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Dayton women's basketball team controlled the game throughout and picked up a 65-46 win over Mississippi Valley State Thursday in the New Orleans Shootout.
 
The Flyers (7-4) heads into the holiday break with seven wins while the Devilettes (0-10) remain winless.  
 
KEY MOMENT
4:18 mark in the 1st quarter – After MSVU took an 11-10 lead on a shot clock-beating halfcourt shot, Dayton went on a 9-2 run and never looked back the rest of the game.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 19, MVSU 13
  • Dayton got off to a fast start with a 6-0 lead in the first 1:45.
  • MVSU answered and scored the next six to tie it at 6-6.
  • By the media break, UD held a narrow 10-8 lead.
  • After a loose ball, the Devilettes hit a desperation halfcourt shot to take an 11-8 lead.
  • The Flyers countered though and pulled ahead 17-11. During that stretch, junior Lauren Cannatelli scored seven straight points for Dayton.
  • The Flyers shot 41.2 percent and held the Devilettes to 31.6 percent.
  • Cannatelli led UD with seven points while senior JaVonna Layfield had six boards.
 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 32, MVSU 22  
  • UD maintained its advantage over the first three minutes of the second quarter thanks to penetration into the paint.
  • At the media timeout, the Flyers led 25-17 over the Devilettes.
  • The Flyers had a 1:35 drought, but senior Alex Harris showed her presence inside to end it with three straight buckets.
  • Dayton outshot MVSU in the first half 38.2 to 31.3. The Flyers also benefited from a 5-3 turnover advantage and an 18-13 rebounding margin.
  • The Flyers had six blocks in the first half
  • Harris led UD with nine points and five rebounds while Layfield had six points and nine boards.
  • MVSU did not attempt a free throw in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, MVSU 35
  • Cannatelli hit two big threes to start the second half and put the Flyers up 38-22.
  • The Devilettes didn't score until they hit a free throw at the 7:16 mark.
  • Halfway through the quarter, MVSU had only two points in the half, both on free throws.
  • Despite the strong defense, Dayton went scoreless over a 4:13 stretch and still held the double-digit lead.
  • Dayton kept MVSU off the glass and ended the quarter with a last second layup by sophomore Jayla Scaife to make it a 13-point game.
  • Cannatelli was the first Flyer to reach double figures with 13 points. Harris and Layfield had nine rebounds up to that point.
 
4th Quarter: Dayton 65, MVSU 46
  • The Flyers continued to pound it inside and Harris showed her power, reaching double digit points and rebounds.
  • Scaife hit a big three to put Dayton up 20, 55-35 with six minutes to go in the game.
  • Harris reached a season-high with 15 points.
  • MVSU didn't have enough to match Dayton in the fourth quarter and fell by 19-points.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
15-11 – Harris recorded a double-double with a season high 15 points to go with 11 rebounds and three blocks.
42.4 - UD shot 42.4 percent from the field and held MVSU to 29 percent.
6-0 – In the first half, Dayton had six blocks while MVSU had none.
13 for 13 – The Flyers had 13 made field goals and 13 assists in the first 20 minutes.
15 – Scaife finished with 15 points.
13 – Layfield recorded 13 rebounds to lead the Flyers.
