@DaytonMBB Tops St. Bonaventure, 82-72 In A-10 Home Opener

DAYTON -- The University of Dayton men's basketball (7-7, 1-1 A-10) defeated St. Bonaventure (11-3, 1-1 A-10), 82-72 on Wednesday at UD Arena.  The Flyers never trailed in the game, and Darrell Davis scored a career-high 28 points to lead all scorers, while also leading the team with seven rebounds.Trey Landers also reached his career-high scoring total with 17 points.

The win was the 200th of coach Anthony Grant's 10-year college coaching career.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Half: Dayton 39 St. Bonaventure 25 

  • The two teams traded baskets 3:12 of the game, and then Dayton took the lead for good with a 10-0 run.
  • Trey Landers had six of the team's first 14 points in the opening six minutes of the half.
  • The Flyers doubled St. Bonnie's score (19-8) by the twelve minute mark.
  • Darrell Davis led the Flyers during the half with 14 points and five rebounds.  
  • UD made 13 of 25 shots from the field (52.0%) and hounded the Bonnies into missing all seven of their three-point shots in the first half.
  • Dayton's led by as much as 18 in the first half, but allowed buckets on SBU's final two posessions in the first half to make it a 14-point game.

 
2nd Half: Dayton 82, St. Bonaventure 72

  • As he did in the first half, Landers scored Dayton's first bucket of the half to swing momentum in Dayton's favor.
  • Jordan Davis scored all five of his points in the game in less than a minute to push the lead out to 16 points (50-34) with 15:45 left in the game. 
  • The Bonnies' Mobley tallied twelve points in the first seven minutes of this half after being held scoreless in the first half.
  • Darrell Davis and Landers each reached their career-high scoring totals with 28 and 17 points, respectively.
  • Although the Flyers kept the lead throughout the entire half, the Bonnies pulled to within seven points twice, at the 2:06 mark and with 36 seconds to go. 
  • After the first time, back-to-back press-breaking dunks by Josh Cunningham and six straight free throws by Cunningham and Kostas Antetokounmpo pushed it back to 15.
  • Darrell Davis made six consecutive freebies in the last 36 seconds to finish it.
  • UD shot 61.1% (11-18) from the field and made 19 of 22 free throws (86.4%) in the second half.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Darrell Davis led the Flyers with a career-high 28 points and seven rebounds.  It was the fourth time this season he raised his career high.
  • Landers had 17 points (6-8 FG), five rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.  The points and blocks were career bests, and the steals tied his career high.
  • Jalen Crutcher had 12 points and a team-high six assists (against just two turnovers).
  • Cunningham scored 10 points (4-5 FG) and grabbed six rebounds.  He scored six of his 10 points in the game's finals two minutes after St. Bonaventure cut teh Flyer lead to seven.
  • Antetokounmpo had eight points and five rebounds in 19 minutes of play off the bench.

  • The Flyers will continue conference play with another home game against the Massachusetts Minutemen on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 12 noon ET.  It will be televised by NBCSN and heard on WHIO Radio.
