The Flyers Rallied From Down Nine To Stay Unbeaten In A-10 Play

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Dayton women's basketball team trailed by as much as nine in the game, but came back to take a crucial 65-59 win on the road at Saint Joseph's.
 
The Flyers (10-4, 3-0 A-10) remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play while the Hawks (7-8, 2-1 A-10) suffer their first conference loss.
 
KEY MOMENT
4th quarter 3:42 mark – Dayton needed some senior leadership and senior Jenna Burdette stepped up when they needed it most with 10 straight points for the Flyers as they pulled away from the Hawks.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, Saint Joseph's 19
  • Senior JaVonna Layfield scored the first seven points for the Flyers and put the visitors up early on.
  • Saint Joseph's hung right there with Dayton though, matching the Flyers basket for basket.
  • At the media break, the Flyers trailed the Hawks, 12-11.
  • Saint Joe's opened the game, going 5-for-7 and shooting 71 percent from the floor.
  • The Hawks added to their lead and jumped ahead 19-15 with two minutes to go in the opening quarter.

  • After 20 minutes, Layfield had a game-high 11 points while sophomore Jordan Wilmoth added six points and two rebounds.
  • The Flyers shot 39.3 percent in the first half while the Hawks shot 33.3 percent.
  • Dayton was outrebounded 23-15 with Saint Joe's picking up 10 offensive boards.

  • The Hawks took a narrow 35-33 lead over the Flyers at the 6:49 mark.
  • That difference held going into the media break as Dayton trailed SJU 39-37.
  • Saint Joe's Chelsea Woods had nine of the Hawks' 11 points to start the quarter.
  • The Flyers trailed by four going into the final 10 minutes.
 
4th Quarter: Dayton 65, Saint Joseph's 59
  • The Flyers responded to start the fourth, led by senior Jenna Burdette, who scored four points and reached the double digit mark for the game.
  • Saint Joseph's was forced to take a timeout at the 7:17 mark as Dayton closed the gap to one at 49-48.
  • Scaife hit a pair of free throws to give the Flyers a 50-49 lead with just over six minutes left in the game.
  • By the media timeout, it was Dayton that had the two-point lead, 56-54 with 3:19 to play.
  • The Hawks were forced to take another timeout at the 2:00 mark after Burdette continued to wreak havoc on the offensive end, putting the Flyers ahead 60-56.
  • Down the stretch, Dayton hit the free throws in order to keep Saint Joe's out of reach.
