DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosts VCU Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. for the annual Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness at UD Arena. The Flyers and Rams square off in Atlantic 10 action on CBS Sports Network.
Fans are invited to wear pink in support of the Pink Ribbon Girls.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers sit atop the A-10 standings with a 10-0 league mark and a 17-4 record overall. Dayton is currently riding an 11-game winning streak and 9-1 at home this season.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her second season at the helm of the Flyers after going 22-10 in her first campaign last year. The WBCA National Rookie Coach of the Year returns an experienced squad with three seniors, six juniors, and three starters.
As a team, Dayton leads the A-10 in field goal percentage defense, scoring offense, and scoring margin, as well as ranking third in the nation in defensive rebounds per game. The Flyers are shooting 43.4 percent overall, 38.0 percent from three point range, and 71.8 percent from the free throw line.
The Flyers are led by senior
Jenna Burdette, who is averaging 16.2 points per game, ranking eighth in the league. Sophomore
Jayla Scaife is chipping in 15.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while senior
JaVonna Layfield averages a double-double with 12.0 points and 13.0 rebounds each contest.
SCOUTING VCU
VCU is battling for its postseason opportunity, sitting in 12th in the A-10 standings currently at 2-7. The Rams are 5-16 overall and 1-8 away from home, but are coming off a big win over Saint Joseph's Wednesday. Head coach Beth O'Boyle is in her fourth season at VCU.
The Rams are being outscored 68.3 to 58.4 points per game and face a -4.4 turnover margin. VCU shoots 37.3 percent from the field, 27.4 percent from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent from the charity stripe. The Rams do outrebound opponents by +2.4.
Leading the way for VCU is Tera Reed, who is scoring 14.0 points and grabbing 6.2 rebounds per game. Jailyn Maddox is contributing 8.4 points and 3.6 boards as well.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton remained undefeated in A-10 play and handed Duquesne its first conference loss with a 79-70 win over the Dukes at home on Wednesday. Four Flyers scored in double figures for Dayton while UD shot 22-of-25 from the free throw line.
VCU won its second league game with a thrilling 56-54 victory over Saint Joseph's at home Wednesday night. Tera Reed led the way with 18 points and five rebounds in the contest.
THE SERIES
The Flyers and Rams have met seven times previously with Dayton winning six times and VCU winning once. The last meeting took place at the A-10 Semifinals in Richmond with the Flyers coming out on top 77-61.
