#UDWBB Holds On For Tough Win At GW

The Flyers Win At GW For The First Time Since 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – The University of Dayton's women basketball team won its 14th in a row and stayed unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 with a tight 57-53 win at George Washington Sunday.

The Flyers (20-4, 13-0 A-10) move one step closer to clinching a first-round bye and a shot at the A-10 title while the Colonials (12-12, 7-5 A-10) still have a lot to play for.

KEY MOMENT
4th quarter - :55 remaining – Senior Alex Harris hit a contested layup with less than a minute remaining of a tie ball game to give Dayton the lead and they never looked back.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1ST Quarter: Dayton 8, GW 12
  • GW jumped out to an early 5-2 lead.
  • Senior Jenna Burdette hit a big three at the top of the key off the assist by sophomore Jayla Scaife to put Dayton on top 6-5 at the 7:14 mark.
  • The Colonials suffered during a 3:15 scoring drought.
  • But by the media break with 3:42 to play, GW had pulled back ahead 9-6. The Flyers went cold for 5:31 after their early run.
  • Dayton out-shot GW in the opening quarter, 38 percent to 29 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, GW 24
  • Sophomore Brittany Ward had a rebound and putback to pull UD back within two to start the second.
  • The Flyer defense forced two shot clock violations by the Colonials to begin as well.
  • Dayton tied it up at 12-12 on the bucket by sophomore Jordan Wilmoth. Junior Lauren Cannatelli's free throws put the Flyers up 14-12.
  • GW didn't get its first bucket until the 7:00 mark.
  • At the media break, Dayton led 20-18.
  • Burdette hit another three at the top of the key with 1:00 left to give Dayton its biggest lead 29-24.
  • Cannatelli and Burdette had seven points each to lead the Flyers while Ward had six.
  • Dayton shot 45.8 percent overall and held GW to 29.0 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 49, GW 37
  • Dayton carried the momentum over to start the third and pulled ahead 33-26.
  • GW suffered for 2:52 without scoring.
  • The Flyers continued to stay in front of the Colonials and led 35-28 at the media timeout.
  • Brianna Cummings scored eight straight points for GW.
  • UD went on a 6-0 run over 55 seconds and forced a GW timeout with 2:26 to play. The Flyers held their biggest lead of the game at 44-32.
  • Burdette hit a half-court buzzer beater to maintain the double-digit Dayton lead going into the final 10 minutes.
4th Quarter: Dayton 57, GW 53
  • The Colonials scored the first five points of the fourth to close the gap.
  • GW made it a four-point game at 49-45 just past halfway through the quarter.
  • Dayton didn't get its first basket of the quarter until a jumper by Jayla Scaife at the 4:41 mark.
  • The Colonials made it a 51-48 contest.
  • GW tied it up at 53-53 with over a minute to play.
  • Alex Harris hit a contested layup to put the Flyers ahead 55-53 with :59 to go.
  • Cannatelli then hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to make it a four-point game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
45.8 % - Dayton shot 45.8 percent and held GW to 32.8 percent.
14 – The Flyers had 14 points off the bench including six from Ward.
13- Burdette led the Flyers with 13 points, hit four three's, and had seven rebounds.

  • The Flyers have a bye week midweek before returning to action next Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. against Fordham. It will be Senior Day after the game with the three seniors being honored.
