DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team heads back out on the road to take on Massachusetts Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Amherst.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers lead the Atlantic 10 with a 11-0 conference mark and boast an 18-4 record overall. UD is currently on a 12-game winning streak and is 5-2 on the road this season.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her second season at the helm of the Flyers after going 22-10 in her first campaign last year. The WBCA National Rookie Coach of the Year returns an experienced squad with three seniors, six juniors, and three starters.
As a team, Dayton is scoring 75.4 points per game and holding opponents to just 61.7 points each contest. The Flyers shoot 43.7 percent overall, 38.6 percent from three-point range, and 71.6 percent from the free throw line. UD leads the A-10 in scoring offense, scoring margin, three point field goal percentage, and defensive rebounds per game.
The Flyers are led by senior
Jenna Burdette, who is averaging 16.5 points and 3.6 assists per game. Sophomore
Jayla Scaife is contributing 15.0 poitns and 5.1 rebounds each contest while senior
JaVonna Layfield is averaging a double-double with 11.9 points and 13.0 rebounds per outing.
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
Massachusetts hosts Dayton for its third straight home game and enters the contest with an 11-12 record on the season. The Minutewomen are 3-7 in A-10 play and 7-5 at home this year. UMass is led by head coach Tory Verdi, who is in his second season in charge.
The Minutewomen average 69.7 points per game and give up 64.0 points to opposing teams. UMass shoots 41.9 percent from the floor, 36.7 percent from behind the arc, and 70.9 percent from the charity stripe.
There are four Minutewomen averaging in double figures scoring, led by Hailey Leidel's 16.1 points per game. Bre Hampton-Bey is scoring 11.4 points each contest with Maggie Mulligan chipping in 10.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton stayed unbeaten in A-10 play with a 74-64 win over VCU Sunday at UD Arena. The Flyers led by as much as 27, but had to fend off a late surge by the Rams to earn the victory.
UMass snuck past La Salle with a 69-66 win at home Sunday. Hailey Leidel led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds while Maggie Mulligan added a double-double with 15 points and 14 boards.
THE SERIES
The Flyers and Minutewomen have played each other 24 times with Dayton winning 13 times and UMass winning 11 times. UD won last year's meeting on Dec. 31, 77-65 at home. The Flyers have won nine of the last 10 match-ups.
