BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Dayton softball team fell 1-0 to both Evansville and Western Kentucky on the first day of WKU's Hilltopper Spring Fling. The Flyers' pitching corps combined for a 0.54 ERA.

Dayton is now 4-9 in the season while Evansville ended the day 4-11 while Western Kentucky improved to 12-5 overall.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Game One: Evansville 1, Dayton 0
Evansville started strong, putting runners on second and third with only one out but the next two batters were put out and struck out to end the inning with no damage. Dayton recorded 12-straight outs before Evansville got back on a bag and the Flyers rallied in the second and fourth to get a runner to third but neither team was able to score through the first five frames. In the top of the sixth, a Purple Ace reached on a Flyer error, was moved to third on a single up the middle and was able to score the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly.

Losing pitcher: Manda Cash (1-3)

Game Two: Western Kentucky 1, Dayton 0
Dayton and Western Kentucky each tallied four hits in the nightcap but the one that counted was a Hilltopper single in the bottom of the third to plate WKU's winning run. The Flyers were able to get runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth, including two hits from junior Kyle Davidson, but were unable to covert.

Losing pitcher: Jessica Weaver (1-3)

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• 0.54 = the Flyers' combined ERA on the day
• 13 = the total number of strikeouts recorded by Cash (7), Weaver (5) and Jessica Gilliam (1)
• .400 = the batting average for Davidson after going 2-for-5 at the plate. She batted one double, recorded one walk and tallied 11 putouts on the day.

Dayton will kick off day two of the Hilltopper Spring Fling with an 11 a.m. match-up against Austin Peay on Saturday. The Flyers will play a second game Saturday as well, depending on win-loss records off all four teams following the first two games of the day.
