BRONX, N.Y. - The University of Dayton softball team was eliminated from postseason play after falling to No. 1 seed Massachusetts, 6-2, Friday evening. Dayton downed Saint Louis, 1-0, in the team's first game of the day at the 2018 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.
Dayton ends its 2018 season with a 31-25 overall record.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
Game One: Dayton 1, Saint Louis 0
Senior
Kailee Budicin recorded two of the team's four hits, including the game-winning RBI-single through the right side, to lead Dayton to a 1-0 win over Saint Louis in the day's first elimination game. Junior
Jessica Gilliam held Saint Louis to only one hit through the first five innings of the game and she tallied a total of five strikeouts on the day. Senior
Manda Cash was the pitcher of record when the Flyers scored the game-winning run in the sixth and sophomore
Jessica Weaver worked the final inning of the contest to collect her second save of the season in the combined shutout effort.
Winning pitcher: Cash (16-7), Save: Weaver (2)
Losing pitcher: Baalman (15-17)
Game Two: Massachusetts 6, Dayton 2
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings but Massachusetts broke open the game with a five-run third inning. The Minutewomen batted through their order, tallying four hits, including a two-out, two-RBI double. Massachusetts added one more run in the fourth as Jena Cozza sent a ball over the left-field fence. Dayton trailed 6-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Flyers were able to take advantage of a couple of Minutewomen miscues. Freshman
Briley Sidor broke up the shutout when she scrambled home on an errant wild pitch to get Dayton on the board. Junior
Kelly Fitzgerald was able to take home on a throwing error by the catcher and the Massachusetts lead was cut to two, 6-2. That would prove to be the final margin as the Minutewomen were able to hold off the Flyers, retiring the side in the top of the seventh.
Winning pitcher: K. Oliver (18-4)
Losing pitcher: Cash (16-8)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 720 = the new Dayton career record for strikeouts set by Cash. She aptly left the circle for the last time after recording a strikeout.
- 207 = the new Dayton career record for games played set by senior Kailee Budicin. She also holds the program record for career at bats (625) and games started (204).
- 126 = the number of wins the Flyers recorded over the last four seasons. The class of 2018 is the winningest in program history.
- 0.00 = Gilliam's ERA for the day. Despite not getting the decision, Gilliam worked 5.2 scoreless innings for the Flyers.
- 3 = the number of hits on the day for Budicin. The only other Flyer with more than one hit between the two games was junior Lisa Tassi (2).
