Ryan Mikesell Tied A Career High With 21 Points To Lead Six Flyers In Double Figures Scoring

Olean, N.Y. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team defeated St. Bonaventure on the road on Saturday evening in double overtime by a score of 89-86. The Flyers improve to 12-6 (4-1 A-10) on the season, while St. Bonaventure slides to 6-12 (2-3 A-10). The loss also snapped a 14-game home winning streak against conference opponents for the Bonnies.

Ryan Mikesell led six Flyers in double figures scoring with 21 points, which tied his career high. Jalen Crutcher (15 points), Josh Cunningham (14), Trey Landers (14), Jordan Davis (13) and Obi Toppin (10) also all scored 10+ for UD. Davis also led the team with a career-high eight rebounds, while Crutcher chipped in six assists.

First Half: St. Bonaventure 34, Dayton 31
  • Neither team scored until the 16:22 mark when Trey Landers made the first basket of the game. The Bonnies missed their first nine shots of the game.
  • Dayton's lead swelled to 11-3 following a Ryan Mikesell jumper with just over 12 minutes to go in the first half.
  • The largest lead of the half for the Flyers came with 9:14 to play when Obi Toppin threw down a dunk to put UD ahead by an 18-9 margin.
  • Dayton led 28-20 at the 4:42 mark, but St. Bonaventure closed the half on a 14-3 run to take a 34-31 advantage into halftime.
  • The first lead of the game for the Bonnies didn't come until Kyle Lofton knocked down a jumper with 1:04 to play to put SBU up 32-31.
End of Regulation: Dayton 69, St. Bonaventure 69
  • Jalen Crutcher and Jordan Davis both hit a 3-pointer to open the half which momentarily put Dayton back in front by a 37-36 margin, but St. Bonaventure answered with a 9-1 scoring run to put the Bonnies back up by seven with 13:12 remaining
  • The largest lead of the game for either team came at the 8:32 mark when Courtney Stockard hit one of his four 3-pointers in the game to put St. Bonaventure up 56-46.
  • Dayton scored the next five points to quickly cut the deficit back down to five, but the Flyers wouldn't get St. Bonaventure's lead below that five-point margin until Toppin made a layup to make the score 63-59 with 3:37 to play.
  • Crutcher hit a deep 3-pointer with a defender's hand in his face to give Dayton a 65-64 lead with 2:27 left in regulation – the first lead for the Flyers since the score was 37-36. Crutcher's basket was also the first of five lead changes in the final 2:27.
  • Amadi Ikpeze gave the Bonnies the lead back briefly with a pair of free throws at the 1:18 mark, but Crutcher maintained his reputation as a clutch player with a layup on the next possession.
  • Stockard, who finished with a game-high 36 points, put the Bonnies in the driver's seat again with two more free throws, but the Flyers had an answer with an Obi Toppin layup on a set play out of a timeout at the other end with 33 seconds.
  • Kyle Lofton drew a shooting foul for St. Bonaventure with nine seconds left in the game, but made just one of the two free throws to tie up the game at 69-69. Jalen Crutcher shot a long contested 3-pointer for Dayton as time expired, but the shot hit off the front iron.
First OT: Dayton 77, St. Bonaventure 77
  • Jalen Crutcher broke a 74-all tie with a 3-pointer at the 1:47 mark to put the Flyers ahead by three.
  • St. Bonaventure tied the game and forced double overtime by Dominick Welch splitting a pair of free throws with 1:15 remaining in the period and then Ladarien Griffin making a layup with 20 seconds remaining.
Final: Dayton 89, St. Bonaventure 86
  • St. Bonaventure held an 81-79 lead early in the second overtime period, but a mini 5-0 scoring run capped off by a Jordan Davis floater put Dayton back in front, 84-81 at the 1:05 mark.
  • Stockard pulled the Bonnies back within one point with a bucket on the other end, but Davis delivered a timely 3-pointer with just 15 seconds left in the game to make it a two-possession game.
  • St. Bonaventure answered with a 3-pointer of its own off the shooting hand of Ladarien Griffin with three seconds remaining, but Ryan Mikesell knocked down both free throws after being fouled off the inbounds pass and Griffin's last-ditch 3-point attempt to send the game into triple overtime was no good.
