Men’s Basketball Falls To No.4 Kansas In Overtime At Maui Championship

Flyers Suffer First Loss Of The Season

LAHAINA, Maui – The University of Dayton men's basketball team took the No. 4 team in the nation to overtime, but fell to Kansas 90-84 in the championship game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Dayton suffered its first loss of the year, and is now 5-1.  Kansas improved to 6-1.
 
The Flyers were led by Ryan Mikesell with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Three other Flyers also scored in double-figures including Obi Toppin (18 points), Ibi Watson (16), and Jalen Crutcher (12).
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Half: Dayton 37, Kansas 36 
• The Flyers started the game by going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc taking an early 9-6 lead.
• Kansas called a timeout with 5:22 left in the half after the Flyers went on a 7-0 run, putting Dayton ahead by two points (29-27).
• Dayton defense did not allow Kansas to score for the last 2:08 of the half.
Ibi Watson led the Flyers in the half with 11 points and four rebounds.
• The Flyers shot 8-of-18 from three in the first half compared to just 2-of-6 for Kansas giving them a large edge from beyond the arc.
• The game remained close throughout the half, with Dayton holding the lead for a total of 6:59 (only two seconds less than Kansas).
• Dayton brought in a total of 17 rebounds during the half.
• The Flyers had 15 points from the bench, whereas the Jayhawks had none.
• Dayton assisted on 9-of-13 made field goals.
 
2nd Half: Dayton 73, Kansas 73
• The second half picked up where the first finished, with the game remaining close.
Jalen Crutcher hit two big threes followed by a Watson three, gave the Flyers a 9-0 run and extended the lead to eight points (66-58).
• Kansas answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game with 3:38 left.
• With Kansas leading by three, with 0:03 left in the half, Crutcher hits a deep three to tie the game up, giving Kansas the ball with 1.1 seconds left in the half (73-73).
• Kansas' last-second three-point attempt from near mid-court drew iron but the miss forced the game into overtime.
• The Flyers shot 7-of-12 (58.3%) from behind the arc in the half, while keeping Kansas to 40%.
• Dayton's bench added eight points in the half, whereas Kansas' bench only contributed three.
• Toppin led the Flyers for the half with 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting and four rebounds.
 
Overtime: Dayton 84, Kansas 90 
Ryan Mikesell scored the first seven points in overtime for Dayton.
• Kansas center Udoka Abuzuike scored the first seven for KU, and then Devon Dotson made four free throws in the last 18 seconds to hold off UD.
• Abuzuike and Dotson were tournament co-MVP's.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Flyers made a season-high 16 three-pointers going 16-of-33 (48%)
• Dayton outscored Kansas 23-3 in bench points.
• The Flyers assisted on 19-of-27 made field goals.
• There were 20 lead changes and the game was tied 14 times.
• Nine Flyers scored in the game. 
• The Dayton starters combined to score 61 points.
• Toppin had a game-high nine rebounds and also blocked three shots.
• Crutcher came through with eight assists and three steals.
