Men's Basketball Bounces Back With 77-48 Wire-To-Wire Win At Rhode Island

Jalen Crutcher Had A Team-High 20 Points & 4 Assists

Kingston, R.I. -- The University of Dayton men's basketball team tallied an impressive conference road win on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 77-48 victory at Rhode Island. The Flyers improve their record to 16-8 (8-3 A-10) on the season, while the Rams (12-11, 5-6 A-10) fall below the .500 mark in conference play with the loss.

Jalen Crutcher led four Flyers in double figures scoring with 20 points and also had a team-high four assists. Obi Toppin (19 points), Josh Cunningham (13) and Jordan Davis (12) also reached the double-digit mark in the scoring column.

First Half: Dayton 41, Rhode Island 27
  • Dayton set the tone for the game early by scoring the first 12 points of the game. Four different Flyers accounted for points in the 12-0 run to open the game, including five from Jordan Davis.
  • Rhode Island scored the next basket to cut the lead to 10, but that was the closest the Rams would get for the final 35 minutes of the game.
  • A 9-1 scoring run capped by a Josh Cunningham layup gave the Flyers their first 20-point lead of the game at the 9:37 mark with the score sitting at 27-7.
  • URI scored five points in the final 48 seconds of the half to bring the lead to 14 with a score of 41-27 heading into halftime.
Final: Dayton 77, Rhode Island 48
  • A Jermaine Harris layup for Rhode Island made the score 44-32 with 16:17 remaining, but a 12-2 Dayton scoring run ensued and Cunningham's made free throw during the run pushed the Flyer lead back to 22 points.
  • The Rams got the deficit under 20 once more (62-43, 7:15), but Jalen Crutcher knocked down a jump shot and the Flyers would lead for at least 20 points the rest of the way.
  • Camron Greer's 3-pointer on a kickout from Trey Landers with 20 seconds remaining rounded out scoring for the game and also gave Greer his first points of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jalen Crutcher led Dayton with 20 points, while Obi Toppin (19), Josh Cunningham (13) and Jordan Davis (12) all scored in double figures as well.
  • Ryan Mikesell had a team-high seven rebounds and shared a team-high mark in assists (4) with Jalen Crutcher.
  • Dayton shot 31-49 (63%) from the floor, while Rhode Island was just 16-54 (30%).
  • Camron Greer found the scoring column for the first time this season with a 3-pointer on the final offensive possession for the Flyers.
  • Dayton now has four road wins in A-10 play, after just one a year ago.
