NASHVILLE - The University of Dayton softball team picked up two wins on its second day of play at the Belmont Bruin Classic. Dayton defeated Northern Kentucky, 3-1, in the first game of the day followed by a 3-2 nail biter over host Belmont in the Flyers' nightcap.
Dayton improves to 7-5 on the season while Northern Kentucky is 3-7 and Belmont moves to 8-5 overall.
GAME ONE
Dayton 3, Northern Kentucky 1
Winning Pitcher:
Catherine Jensen (2-1) - worked a complete game with one earned run and four strikeouts
Losing Pitcher: Ginther (0-2) - gave up three earned runs in 4.0 innings of work
GAME TWO
Dayton 3, Belmont 2
Winning Pitcher:
Jessica Gilliam (3-2) - held the Bruins scoreless over the final 3.1 innings of the game while recording five strikeouts to three walks
Losing Pitcher: Lee (4-2) - worked a complete game with two earned runs on five hits
KEY MOMENT
In the bottom of the seventh inning against Belmont, Gilliam faced loaded bases with only one out as Dayton was holding on to a one-run lead. She rang up the next batter swinging and caught the subsequent batter looking to end the game and earn the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• 3-for-4 - freshman
Alyssa Cacini went 3-for-4 at the plate today, including what proved to be the game-winning, two-RBI double against Belmont
• 5-for-5 - as a team, the Flyers were a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases. Senior
Lisa Tassi snatched up two stolen bases on the day
• 1.50 - the Dayton pitching staff combined for a 1.50 ERA over two wins on Saturday
UP NEXT
The Flyers will close out the Bruin Classic with their final two games of the weekend. Dayton is scheduled to square off against Alabama A&M Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET followed by a game against Belmont. Due to impending inclement weather, Sunday's original schedule was modified.
