PHOENIX – The University of Dayton men's basketball team will play in the state of Arizona for the first time during the regular season on Sunday, Dec. 8, when the Flyers meet Saint Mary's College in the Air Force Reserve Jerry Colangelo Classic presented by Citi.
The game is part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's series of collegiate basketball events, and will be played at Talking Stick Resort Arena, the home of the NBA's Phoenix Suns.
"We are honored and excited to play in the 2019 Jerry Colangelo Classic," Dayton coach
Anthony Grant said. "The impact that Mr. Colangelo has had on the sport of basketball in our country is incredible. Coach Bennett has built a great program and Saint Mary's will be another high-level opponent on our schedule. We are looking forward to playing in Phoenix and giving our fans from the Southwest and West Coast an opportunity to see us in person."
UD's previous three trips to Arizona came during the post-season during the 1974 and 2000 NCAA tournaments. All three games were played in Tucson at the McKale Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
This will be the fourth meeting between Dayton and Saint Mary's, and will be the fourth venue in the series. The Flyers won the first meeting at the old UD Fieldhouse on Dec. 14, 1957. The Gaels won the next two meetings – at UD Arena on Nov. 19, 2016 and at McKeon Pavilion on the Saint Mary's campus in Moraga, Calif.
Saint Mary's returns four starters from last year's 22-5 team that upset Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference tournament championship.
Dayton improved by seven wins in
Anthony Grant's second season as the Dayton head coach, finishing 21-12 and reaching the NIT. UD was third in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 13-5 record. Dayton was second in the nation as a team in field goal percentage (.504, 902-1789). That was also the best single-season FG% in school history.
The Flyers return three starters and will add five veteran redshirts in 2019-20. Included in the starters are All-Atlantic 10 performers
Obi Toppin (2019 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-A-10), and junior guard
Jalen Crutcher (Third Team All-A-10). Also returning are 2018-19 co-captains
Trey Landers and
Ryan Mikesell.
The Colangelo Classic is a doubleheader event. Also playing on Dec. 8 will be Grand Canyon and Liberty.
Tickets for the Jerry Colangelo Classic and Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase will go on-sale to the general public on June 27th via all Ticketmaster locations and the Talking Stick Resort Arena box office. Citi is the official presale credit card of the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase presale tickets on June 25th and 26th, 2019.
Game times and television broadcast information will be released at a later date.
Dayton is also playing in the Chicago Legends doubleheader at the United Center on Dec. 21.
