It Will Be A Showdown Between The Top Two Teams In The A-10

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosts VCU Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m. at UD Arena on ESPNU. It will be Senior Day for the Flyers and a big Atlantic 10 showdown between the top two teams in the standings.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is 18-7 on the season and 11-0 in A-10 play. The Flyers are 8-2 at home this season and currently riding a 13-game winning streak.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fourth season in charge of the Flyers and already has two tournament and one regular season conference titles, as well as being the former A-10 Coach of the Year in 2018. She recently earned her 100th career victory.

As a team, the Flyers are scoring 64.8 points per game and holding opponents to 57.8 points each contest. Dayton is shooting 38.1 percent overall, 33.6 percent from three point range, and 71.3 percent from the free throw line. UD is one of the top rebounding teams in the league with a +2.2 margin and has a +2.5 turnover margin.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Erin Whalen with 12.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while senior Jayla Scaife is right there with 12.7 points and 5.2 boards per outing.

SCOUTING VCU
VCU comes to UD Arena with a 14-10 record on the year and 9-2 conference mark, sitting just behind the Flyers in second in the A-10 standings. The Rams are 5-5 on the road this season and have won two of three.

Head coach Beth O'Boyle is in her fourth season at VCU and coming off her 100th career victory for the Rams.

This season, VCU is averaging 59.3 points each contest and allowing 57.3 points to opposing teams. The Rams are shooting 41.6 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from behind the arc, and 69.0 percent from the charity stripe. VCU faces a -1.8 rebounding margin, but has a +1.8 turnover margin.

Leading the Rams is Tera Reed with 15.3 points and a 44.8 field goal percentage. Danielle Hammond is adding 11.0 points and 5.7 boards each outing as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton snuck a road win at Massachusetts Wednesday 52-51 after Jayla Scaife hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to put UD ahead. Julia Chandler recorded a double-double to lead the way.

VCU earned a 56-47 victory over St. Bonaventure despite a tied score going into the fourth. It was Coach Boyle's 100th win at VCU and was led by Tera Reed's game-high 22 points.

THE SERIES
Dayton and VCU have played 10 times previously on a series that dates back to 2013. The Flyers have won seven times, but the Rams won both meetings last year, including in the A-10 Semifinals.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
The Flyers 44th in the country in rebounds and 47th in scoring defense. Individually, Shakeela Fowler ranks 42nd in the nation in free throw percentage.

60 AND UNDER
Dayton has not allowed an opponent to score more than 60 points since its first win of the 11-game winning streak against East Carolina on Dec. 21.

SCAIFE NAMED A-10 POW
Senior forward Jayla Scaife earned her first A-10 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 27 after averaging 20.5 points an 9.0 rebounds in Dayton's two wins over George Washington and Fordham.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
In Coach Green's four year tenure at UD, the Flyers are 28-2 in the month of January including perfect marks in 2016-17, 2017-18, and this season as well.

FLYERS BY 40
Dayton defeated La Salle on Jan. 4, 2020 in the A-10 opener 98-58, the first 40-point win for the Flyers since defeating La Salle on Feb. 22, 2015, 91-49, at home. Dayton scored 94+ points in two of three straight games.

CHALLENGED EARLY AND OFTEN
Dayton created one of the hardest non-conference schedules in program history, taking on three nationally ranked teams in the first seven games, and facing numerous 2019 NCAA Tournament participants. The Flyers have already played No. 6 South Carolina, No. 4 UConn, No. 21 Gonzaga, three-peat MAC Champions Central Michigan, and former NCAA participants Northeastern, Auburn, and Maine.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 110 of its last 135 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.812), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

WE'VE GOT AN AUDIENCE
On Dec. 5, 2019, the Flyers played in front of 10,554 fans at UD Arena while hosting Morehead State. The record-breaking crowd was due to the overwhelming success of UD's annual School Day game, a chance for local school-aged children to take a field trip with the Flyers. It was the fourth largest crowd for a NCAA women's game this year and biggest in program history. With a home attendance average of 2,605, Dayton ranked 48th out of 349 DI programs last season.

COACH GREEN EARNS 100th CAREER WIN
Dayton head coach Shauna Green earned her 100th career win with a 59-55 victory over George Mason on Jan. 8, 2020 at UD Arena. With a previous coaching stint at Loras College, Green has amassed over 70 wins at UD alone.
