Men’s Basketball Accelerates Past Rhode Island In 84-57 Road Win

Flyers Go Undefeated On Road In 2019-20

KINGSTON, R.I. – The No. 3 University of Dayton men's basketball team has continued its hottest start in school history, improving to 28-2, after an 84-57 road victory against Rhode Island. The Flyers continued to remain undefeated in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Dayton has also extended its win streak to 19 games, giving them the longest win streak in the country.
 
Dayton improved to 17-0 in conference and a school-best 28-2 overall. Rhode Island fell to 12-5 in conference and 20-9 overall.  The 28 wins tie the most ever in the regular season in UD history.  Dayton also won every road game in a eason for the first time since 1954-55.
 
The Flyers were led by Obi Toppin with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, two rebounds and two assists. Two additional Flyers finished in double-digits -- Jalen Crutcher finished with 17 points, four rebounds and five assists, and Trey Landers finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Half: Dayton 46, Rhode Island 30
• Dayton scored the first points of the game when Trey Landers scored in the paint and was sent to the line, making the free throw.
• The Flyers went on to outscore Rhode Island 8-7, giving Dayton an early 11-7 lead.
• Rhode Island was able to cut the Flyers lead down to two points before Dayton went on a 7-0 run that was highlighted with a vicious slam from Toppin.
• The Rams scored a quick five points, before Ryan Mikesell converted from beyond the arc.
• Dayton kept the pressure on Rhode Island as Jordy Tshimanga scored four quick points in the paint that forced a Rams' timeout.
• Rhode Island was able to cut the Flyers' lead back to seven points (25-18), leading into a media timeout with 7:30 left to play.
• The Rams were able to make two from the line before Ibi Watson scored for the Flyers, giving them their first points after being scoreless for 2:07.
• Watson's basket started a Flyers' 6-0 spurt that was highlighted with a fastbreak slam by Obi Toppin; Dayton extended its lead to 31-20.
• Rhode Island then outscored the Flyers 7-4 before Jalen Crutcher and Toppin both scored a pair from the line; Crutcher was sent to the line on a technical foul by the Rams.
• Dayton allowed the Rams two points before Crutcher and Rodney Chatman scored seven in a row for the Flyers, giving them a 46-29 lead; Crutcher had four of the points from the line.
• Rhode Island was only able to make one free throw in the last 3:17 of the half.
• Crutcher led the Flyers with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting, 6-of-6 from the line, four rebounds and two assists.
• Toppin and Landers both finished the half with 10 points each.
• Dayton shot 16-of-32 (50%) from the field while holding Rhode Island to 29% overall.
• The Flyers shot 12-of-13 (92.3%) from the line; Landers, Crutcher and Toppin all shot perfect from the line.
• Dayton narrowly outrebounded the Rams 22-20 largely due to Landers' eight rebounds.
• The Flyers dominated in the paint, outscoring Rhode Island 24-12.
• Rhode Island's leading scorer, Fatts Russell, was held to only six points in the half, largely due to Dwayne Cohill and Chatman's defense.
• Dayton held the lead for 17:18 of the half with the game being tied for 2:41; Dayton's largest lead was 17 points.
 
2nd Half: Dayton 84, Rhode Island 57
• Rhode Island scored the first four points of the half before Chatman drained a three for the Flyers.
• Dayton followed Chatman's three by outscoring Rhode Island 5-4, giving Dayton a 54-38 lead with 15:41 to play.
• The Rams cut Dayton's lead down to 14 points after scoring four points to the Flyers' two before calling a timeout.
• After being scoreless for 3:31, Dayton scored on three consecutive plays, giving them a 21-point lead (63-42).
• Rhode Island responded with a three before Toppin drained one of his own, starting the Flyers on a 7-0 run.
• The Rams narrowly outscored the Flyers 7-6, bringing Dayton's lead to 76-52 with 4:40 left in the game.
• Dayton finished the game outscoring Rhode Island 8-6; Jhery Matos and Christian Wilson made back-to-back threes for the Flyers' last points.
• Toppin led the Flyers in the half with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting.
• Dayton shot 13-of-30 (43.3%) from the field and 6-of-13 (46.2%) from beyond the arc while holding Rhode Island to 28.6% overall.
• The Flyers outrebounded the Rams 27-18 in the half; Landers had six rebounds in the half with six other Flyers pulling in at least two rebounds.
• Dayton held the lead for the entirety of the half with a largest lead of 29 points.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Toppin led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line. Crutcher added 17 points.
• The Human Highlight Reel had four dunks during the game, giving him his 100th dunk for the season.
• Landers recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 6-of-7 from the field. 
• Dayton shot 29-of-62 (47%) from the field while holding Rhode Island to just 17-of-59 (29%).
• The Flyers shot 18-of-21 (86%) from the free throw line compared to 17-of-35 (49%) for the Rams. 
• Ten Flyers scored during the game.
• Dayton dominated the glass, out-rebounding Rhode Island 49-38; Eight Flyers had three or more rebounds.
• The Flyers assisted on 16 of their 29 made field goals.
• The bench contributed 19 points for Dayton compared to just eight points for Rhode Island.
• The Flyers won the points-in-the-paint battle 38-22.
• Rhode Island's leading scorer, Fatts Russell, was held to nine points on 2-of-13 shooting during the game largely due to Chatman and Cohill's defense; He averages 19.2 points per game.
• The Flyers did not trail in the contest.
• Dayton is 28-2 for the first time in school history, has won 19 games in a row in a single season for the first time since the Flyers won 20 in 1951-52, and are 17-0 in the A-10 for the first time ever.
