Women’s Basketball Wins Big On The Road At Purdue, 78-62

The Flyers Outscored The Boilers 45-31 In The Second Half

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team had a dominant second-half performance and powered its way to a 78-62 victory over Purdue University Saturday night.

The Flyers (3-1) showed up in their first road contest while the Boilermakers (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season.

KEY MOMENT
7:11 in 3rd quarter – Dayton was only up two points at 38-36, but went on a 8-0 run to push the lead to double digits and it never got any closer.

1st Quarter: Dayton 12, Purdue 11
  • Purdue was the first to score, but sophomore Makira Cook quickly answered with a drive and a jumper for Dayton.
  • The Boilers pulled ahead by six, before the Flyers ended a two-minute drought and made it an 8-6 ballgame by the media timeout. UD held Purdue to a 2:30 scoring drought to that point.
  • Dayton tied the game out of the break with a drive by grad student Araion Bradshaw, who dished it to senior Kyla Whitehead, making it a 6-0 run.
  • The Flyers held the Boilers to a 5:05 scoring drought heading into the late stages of the first.
  • Dayton took its first lead of the game at the 1:30 mark with a layup by Bradshaw.
  • Purdue scored at the buzzer to make it a one-point UD lead.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 33, Purdue 31
  • Grad student Erin Whalen drilled a three at the 8:12 mark to put the Flyers up 17-13, their biggest lead of the game up to that point.
  • Cook nailed a three of her own with 6:14 to play to put Dayton ahead by nine, 24-15. That gave her double-figures for the game.
  • With under three minutes to play, Purdue had taken the lead back 27-26, with a 12-2 run.
  • Sophomore Capria Brown scored five straight points, including a three to tie the game at 31-31 with a minute to go.
  • Cook had a team-high 13 points in the first half while Whalen had 11 points. UD shot 50 percent from the field.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 56, Purdue 44
  • The two teams battled back and forth in the early stages of the second half with neither team willing to budge.
  • Whalen hit a three at the 6:52 mark to put UD up 42-36, giving her seven points already in the quarter.
  • Dayton was amidst a 9-0 run and a 2:40 Purdue drought. The Flyers went 5-for-5.
  • Junior Mariah Perez scored back-to-back buckets to push the Flyers' advantage to 11.
  • Flyers held a 12-point lead going into the final quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 78, Purdue 62
  • Neither team made a dent in the score until a Kyla Whitehead free throw with 8:24 on the clock.
  • Purdue didn't get its first points until the 7:04 mark with a layup. UD still led 59-46.
  • Dayton called a timeout with 6:03 to play to slow the Purdue rally.
  • Whalen got an and-one out of the break to add to the Flyers' advantage.
  • With two minutes to go in the game and Dayton ahead 73-59, the Boilers were running out of time.
  • In the end, the Flyers held Purdue for a 2:11 drought to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • 48 – Dayton shot 48 percent from the floor, a season-high, while holding Purdue to 38 percent.
  • 41 to 30 – The Flyers outrebounded the Boilers 41 to 30.
  • 26 – Erin Whalen dropped a team-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go with eight rebounds.
  • 18 – Makira Cook chipped in 18 points to go with four assists.

Dayton will head south to the Daytona Beach Invitational next week in Florida. The Flyers will take on Mississippi State Thanksgiving Day at noon before facing Illinois Friday, Nov. 26 at 2:15 p.m. Both games will be played at the Ocean Center and will be streamed on FloHoops.com.
