DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will head to the University of Richmond Wednesday, Jan. 26 for a 6 p.m. tip-off against the Spiders on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton rides an eight-game winning streak into Wednesday's contest and sits at 14-3 on the season and 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Flyers are 4-1 on the road this year.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She earned her 100th win at Dayton in the regular season finale last year.
As a team this year, Dayton is scoring 67.9 points per game and allowing just 57.4 points to opponents. The Flyers are shooting 40.7 percent overall, 37.1 percent from three point range, and 67.1 percent from the free throw line. UD has +5.8 rebounding and +1.4 turnover margins.
Dayton is led by graduate student
Erin Whalen, who is averaging 15.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and sophomore
Makira Cook, who is adding 15.4 points per game. Grad student
Jenna Giacone is the other double-digit scorer with 11.9 points per game.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
Richmond returns home after a two-game road stretch last week, boasting a 12-7 record on the year and 3-3 A-10 mark. The Spiders are coming off a loss at La Salle, but are 5-3 at home this year.
Head coach Aaron Roussell is in his third year at Richmond, but has over 17 years of head coaching experience and a .700 winning percentage.
This season, the Spiders are averaging 72.8 points each outing and holding opposing squads to 66.1 points per game. Richmond is shooting 44.7 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from behind the arc, and 74.6 percent from the charity stripe. The Spiders have a positive rebounding margin, but have a -3.6 turnover margin. Richmond ranks seventh in the nation in blocked shots and three pointers.
Richmond is led by Addie Budnik with 13.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and she ranks fifth in the country with 55 blocks. Kate Klimkiewicz is chipping in 12.7 points and 6.2 boards per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton rallied for a 52-48 victory over Fordham Sunday on ESPNU. The Flyers got a double-double from
Tenin Magassa with 13 rebounds and 10 points while
Erin Whalen added 13 points and
Makira Cook added 12 points.
Richmond fell to La Salle on the road Sunday, 77-57, after giving up 43 second-half points. The Spiders got 15 points from Kate Klimkiewicz and 14 points from Grace Townsend with both recording team highs of seven boards.
THE SERIES
Dayton and Richmond have met 28 times previously with the Flyers winning 18 contests to the Spiders' 10 victories. The Flyers have won the last 15 games including last year's meeting, 72-54 in Dayton.
STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 13th in the nation in three point field goal percentage and 20th in turnovers per game. Individually,
Araion Bradshaw ranks 11th in the country in assist to turnover ratio while
Erin Whalen is 19th in three point field goals made.
GIACONE CHOSEN FOR WBCA SO YOU WANT TO BE A COACH PROGRAM
Graduate student
Jenna Giacone was selected as a participant in this year's WBCA "So You Want To Be A Coach Program". As part of a two-day event held at the 2022 WBCA convention, Giacone will join fellow women's basketball players to learn the ins-and-outs of coaching, networking, and leadership.
OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 40-2 in her six seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in four of her first five seasons.
THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 637 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.
