Women's Basketball Hosts St. Bonaventure Tuesday In A-10 Opener

The Flyers Finished Non-Conference Play 9-3 Overall

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will open Atlantic 10 play Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. against St. Bonaventure University. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ from UD Arena.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 9-3 record overall and 4-1 home mark. The Flyers will head into conference games as the preseason favorites and will look to defend their league title from last year.  

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She earned her 100th win at Dayton in the regular season final last year.

As a team this year, Dayton is scoring 66.8 points per game while allowing just 59.0 points to opposing teams. The Flyers are shooting 39.3  percent overall, 36.9 percent from three point range, and 66.4 percent from the free throw line. UD benefits from +3.3 rebounding and +2.0 turnover margins.

Dayton is led by sophomore Makira Cook with 15.8 points per game while graduate students Erin Whalen and Jenna Giacone are adding 15.0 points and 12.8 points respectively.

SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE
St. Bonaventure comes to Dayton with an 8-3 record on the year and 3-1 road mark. The Bonnies have won three in a row and will look to carry that momentum into their A-10 opener.

Head coach Jesse Fleming is in his sixth season at his alma mater where he graduated in 2005.

This season, the Bonnies are averaging 59.2 points each outing and holding opposing squads to 54.9 points per game. SBU is shooting 38.7 percent from the field, 27.0 percent from behind the arc, and 69.2 percent from the charity stripe. The Bonnies are outrebounding opponents and committing fewer turnovers as well.

Leading St. Bonaventure is All-Conference honoree Asianae Johnson, who is averaging 15.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Tori Harris is contributing 11.3 points and 5.8 boards each outing while I'yanna Lops is the leading rebounder with 6.8 rebounds and 8.3 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton hosted Wright State on short notice New Year's Eve and earned a 75-65 victory over the crosstown opponent. The Flyers had a career-high 29 points from Makira Cook and a breakout game from Capria Brown with 12 points and five rebounds.

St. Bonaventure last played on Dec. 23 at East Tennessee State where the Bonnies earned a 56-49 victory over former UD assistant coach Simon Harris' squad. SBU held ETSU to just eight points in the third quarter and were led by Asianae Johnson's 16-point performance.

THE SERIES
Dayton and St. Bonaventure have met 30 times previously with the Flyers winning 20 contests to the Bonnies' 10 wins. UD has won the last six meetings including two wins last season, on New Years Day at home and Jan. 31 in New York.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 17th in the nation in turnovers per game and 20th in three point field goal percentage. Individually, Araion Bradshaw is 39th in free throw attempts and 37th in assist to turnover ratio while Makira Cook is 36th in field goal attempts.

SHOUP HILL NAMED A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman forward Brynn Shoup-Hill was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 6 for her efforts in wins over Florida A&M and Illinois St. The Goshen, Ind. native had a breakout performance with a career-high 14 points, going 4-of-4 from three and 2-of-2 from the free throw line along with three rebounds in the win Sunday. She finished the week with an 8.5 points per game average and only missed one shot over the two-game stretch last week, both wins for the Flyers.

WHALEN, GIACONE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM AT WEST PALM BEACH INVITATIONAL
Graduate students Erin Whalen and Jenna Giacone earned First Team and Second Team honors respectively at the West Palm Beach Invitational on Dec. 20-21 in their efforts in victories over High Point and Clemson.

COOK EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS AT DAYTONA BEACH INVITATIONAL
Sophomore guard Makira Cook was named to the All-Tournament Team as well as Player of the Game in the win over Illinois, capping off a productive weekend at the Daytona Beach Invitational. Cook averaged 18.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game without committing a turnover and shooting 46.2 percent from three.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 126 of its last 153 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.824), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 34-2 in her first five seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in four of her five seasons.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 633 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 179-22 (.889) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
