Women's Basketball Returns To Action Thursday At UD Arena

The Flyers Host Cedarville At 7 p.m. At Home

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will return to action after a two-week break for final exams and the holidays, hosting Cedarville University Thursday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton will play its final non-conference game of the regular season this week and is still looking for its first win of the campaign. This marks the sixth home game for UD this year.

Head coach Tamika Williams-Jeter is in her first season in charge of her hometown Flyers, coming over after a year at Wittenberg. She has assistant coaching stops at Kansas, Kentucky, Penn State, and Ohio State.

As a team this year, the Flyers are averaging 61.5 points per game and giving up 71.1 points to opposing teams. Dayton is shooting 39.2 percent overall, 31.7 percent from three-point range, and 71.5 percent from the free throw line. The Flyers benefit from a +4.1 rebounding margin.

Dayton is led by redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon with 13.3 points per game and senior Mariah Perez with 10.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Newcomers Nayo Lear and Anyssa Jones have chipped in 8.7 points and 8.3 points each contest respectively.

SCOUTING CEDARVILLE
Cedarville travels the 26 miles to Dayton this week with a 2-8 record on the season and five-game losing streak. The Yellow Jackets are 0-4 on the road this season and playing its first away contest since Dec. 10.

Head coach Jason Smith is in his second season at Cedarville and guided the Lady Jackets to a 17-12 record in his first campaign.

As a team, Cedarville is scoring 70.0 points each outing and allowing 75.6 points to opponents. The Lady Jackets are shooting 43.0 percent from the field, 37.3 percent from behind the arc, and 76.0 percent from the charity stripe. CU faces a -7.5 rebounding margin as well.

Leading the way for the Jackets is Lydia Sweeney, who is averaging 15.3 points per game, Paige Garr, who is adding 14.3 points each contest, and Anne Wheeler, who is contributing 10.7 points per game. Cedarville has had seven different players earn at least one start this season.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton went on the road short-handed in a tough environment at Toledo on Dec. 11 and suffered a 57-45 loss to the Rockets. Anyssa Jones had a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds while Maliya Perry had 13 points and nine boards.

Cedarville hosted Wisconsin Parkside on Dec. 19 and fell 71-64 at the Callan Athletic Center. The Lady Jackets led at halftime, but allowed seven second-half threes in the loss. Wheeler led the way for CU with 13 points and six rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and Cedarville are meeting for the 20th time in program history with the Flyers holding a 13-6 advantage. The two teams have not met in the regular season since March 2, 1979 in the OAISW Tournament when the Flyers came out on top 82-43. UD would go on the following season to win the AIAW national championship

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
As a team, Dayton ranks 66th in the nation in rebounds per game and third in the Atlantic 10. Individually, Mariah Perez ranks 15th in the country in offensive rebounds per game while Destiny Bohanon is 35th in minutes played and 37th in assist-to-turnover ratio.

FREEMAN GETS 1,000TH POINT
Senior guard Sydney Freeman reached the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career with a made three at the 2:55 mark in the first quarter of the game at Toledo on Dec. 11. She needed just three points entering the contest and finished the night with five points.

DOUBLING-UP
Senior Mariah Perez already has four double-doubles this season, giving her five for her career. She recorded double-digit points and rebounds in games against Northern Kentucky, Kentucky, Florida, and Fairfield already this season. On top of that, she was one point shy of another against Ohio with nine points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

The Flyers will open up Atlantic 10 play on the road New Year's Day at George Mason for a 3 p.m. tip-off in Fairfax, Va.
