BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team fell behind big in the first half and could recover, losing at Virginia Tech 77-49 Wednesday night.
DaRon Holmes II led UD with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was his fourth consecutive double-double.
Dayton is now 5-5 on the year, while Tech improves to 9-1.
First Half – Virginia Tech 42, Dayton 21
- The Flyers led 10-4 five minutes into the game.
- The Hokies scored 9 of the next 11 points to take a lead they would not lose.
- A Mike Sharavjamts floater pulled UD to within one (15-14) with 12:19 let in the half, but Tech out-scored UD 27-7 the rest of the half.
- The Flyers missed their first nine three-pointers with Toumani Camara breaking the skid with one 39 seconds before halftime.
Second Half – Virginia Tech 77, Dayton 49
- Dayton scored five points in the first 90 seconds of the half.
- But after that, the margin fluctuated from 18 points to the final of 28.
- Dayton backups Kaleb Washington (12 minutes in the second half), Zimi Nwokeji (8 in the second half) and Richard Amaefule (7) got their most extended runs of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- DaRon Holmes had his fourth double-double in a row, with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
- Over those four games, Holmes has scored 77 points, grabbed 41 rebounds and drawn 36 fouls.
- Toumani Camara scored nine points, the first of which were his 1,000th career college point (529 at Georgia, now 479 at Dayton.)
- Virginia Tech shot .492 (31-63) from the field, while UD shot (.300, 18-60).
- The Flyers out-rebounded the Hokies 42-35.
