HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team started the 2023-24 campaign with a 102-58 defeat at No. 2 Connecticut.
The Flyers (0-1) faced an uphill battle from the beginning while the Huskies (1-0) showed while they are national title contender.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 13, UConn 26
- Dayton got off to a slow start as UConn was able to pull ahead by double digits by the 4:51 mark.
- At the first media, the Flyers trailed 16-5.
- Out of the break, junior Ivy Wolf and senior Anyssa Jones drilled back-to-back threes to cut into the margin.
- Wolf had eight points while Jones had five points to combine for all 13 points for the Flyers.
- UConn shot 47 percent in the first quarter while Dayton shot 36 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, UConn 59
- The Huskies opened up the second on a 7-2 run forcing a Flyer timeout with 8:40 on the clock.
- UConn managed to get the lead to 20 just three minutes into the second quarter at 39-19.
- Dayton put a little run together and UConn called its first time out with 5:35 to play.
- Both teams were perfect from the free throw line until the 4:19 mark when the Huskies missed their first. UD didn't miss its first until 2:20 to play.
- The Flyers trailed by 28 at the half.
- UConn shot 58 percent in the opening 20 minutes while UD shot 30 percent.
- Dayton had a 12-8 second-chance points advantage.
- Wolf led the way with 13 points in her Dayton debut while Jones chipped in nine points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 40, UConn 84
- Wolf picked up where she left off with a three early on in the second half.
- The Huskies held a 64-35 lead at the media timeout with 7:14 to play in the third.
- Despite the score difference, the Flyers continued to battle on the defensive end.
- Sophomore Nayo Lear and graduate student Mariah Perez both got their first baskets of the game to help out the cause in the third.
- By the 1:21 mark, UConn called its second timeout and had an 81-40 advantage.
- Turnovers were 7-1 in favor of the Huskies in the third quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 58, UConn 102
- Both teams started out cold offensively until freshman Riley Rismiller drilled a three at the top of the key to score her first field goal as a Flyer.
- Jones drove and scored a contest shot to give her double digits in the game, joining Wolf.
- By the final media timeout, the Flyers trailed 95-48.
- Freshman Denika Lightbourne drove to the basket and got her first collegiate points as well.
- Fellow freshman Eve Fiala followed suit with a good post-move to get her first Dayton points in the final minute.

Ivy Wolf scored a team-high 16 points in her Dayton debut.

Anyssa Jones scored 11 points and added four rebounds as the second double-digit scorer for Dayton.
8 and 9 –
Mariah Perez had a strong second half and recorded eight points and nine rebounds, close to a double-double.
33% to 50% - The Flyers were held to 33 percent overall while the Huskies shot 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from three.
49-33 – Dayton was out-rebound 49-33 in the game.
