Women’s Basketball Earns Tough Victory Against LaSalle

The Flyers Have Won Two In A Row

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's basketball team closed out a hard-fought win against the LaSalle University Explorers on Wednesday night at UD Arena. 
 
The Flyers (6-19, 5-9 A-10) pick up their fifth Atlantic 10 victory while the Explorers' (16-13, 7-7 A-10) drop their second straight.
 
KEY MOMENT
End of 1st quarter - Dayton jumps out to a 24-12 lead in the first quarter. They would not trail the rest of the game. 
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 24, LaSalle 12
  • Senior Mariah Perez opens up the scoring for the Flyers, making a layup to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Junior Taisya Kozlova hits a three to give the Flyers a 5-0 lead.
  • Dayton performed exceptionally well on both ends of the court and held a 13-5 lead at the media timeout. They made five of their first eight field goals while forcing two turnovers and grabbing eight rebounds. 
  • Good ball movement from the Flyers resulted in a made layup for sophomore Arianna Smith.
  • Kozlova hit her second three of the game off an assist from junior Sydney Freeman to extend the lead to 22-10.
  • At the end of the quarter, Dayton shot 50 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three. Junior Anyssa Jones led the scoring for the Flyers with seven points. Smith led in both assists and rebounds with two and six respectively. 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 30 , LaSalle 22
  • Sydney Freeman got a block on the defensive end and took the ball coast to coast to make a floater which makes the lead 26-15.
  • A slow start to the quarter for both sides saw the Flyers leading 28-15 at the media timeout.
  • Smith hit a layup off a nice pass from Freeman to extend the lead to 30-17.
  • The Flyers finished the half boasting a 42 percent field goal percentage and grabbed an impressive 28 boards. Mariah Perez leads the way with eight points while Freeman tallied four assists and Smith has grabbed 7 boards. 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 50 , LaSalle 36
  • Smith made a layup to get the second half scoring started for Dayton.
  • Freeman made an impressive layup and draws a foul. She hits the free throw to make it a 35-22 lead.
  • The Flyers led 40-29 at the media timeout. They are shooting 44 percent from the field and have pulled in nine rebounds. 
  • Perez jumped into double digits with a made layup. She had 10 points on the game.
  • Anyssa Jones hit a three off of Freeman's assist to give her 12 points on the night.
  • Freeman hit a layup and an and one to reach 13 points for the game. Dayton made their last five field goals.
  • Dayton ended the quarter on fire, making six of their last seven field goals. They were led by Sydney Freeman with 13 points and six assists. Arianna Smith had totaled a team-high 12 rebounds. 
4th Quarter: Dayton 65 , LaSalle 51
  • Smith opened up the quarter by making a layup to give Dayton a 52-39 lead.
  • Arianna Smith drew a foul on a made put-back layup after a Koslova miss. This put her in double digits with 11 points. 
  • At the media timeout the Flyers led 54-44. They were helped by a LaSalle scoring drought over the last 3:25 in which the Explorers missed their last six shots. 
  • Kozlova hit a three to expand the lead to 57- 44.
  • Perez knocked down two free throws to extend the lead to eight at 59-51 before Dayton forced a turnover on the defensive end. 
  • Freeman hit a deep three to bring the lead to 11 with 1:20 remaining. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
54- Dayton grabbed 54 rebounds on the game; 37 defensively and 17 offensively.
24- The Flyers started off hot, scoring 24 points in the first quarter. 
5- All five Dayton starters finished with double-digit points. Freeman had 18, Perez had 14, Jones had 12, Smith had 11, and Kozlova had 10
3-  Three Flyers finished with a double-double Mariah Perez finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Arianna Smith had 11 points and 15 rebounds and Anyssa Jones tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
KEY STAT
The Flyers brought down a total of 54 rebounds with 37 coming on the defensive glass and 17 on offense.
