Men’s Basketball Falls Short At Home Against George Mason, 74-69

DaRon Holmes II Scores Career-high 34 Points In Loss

Box Score DAYTON – The University of Dayton men's basketball team could not come away with a win on Saturday night against the George Mason Patriots. The Flyers lost by a score of 74-69 and have two games left on their schedule. DaRon Holmes II scored a career-high 34 points in a back-and-forth battle that resulted in a Patriots win.

Dayton is now 19-10 overall and 11-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers are now tied for second place in the conference with Saint Louis and Fordham.

First Half – , George Mason 33, Dayton 28
  • DaRon Holmes II started the Flyers' night with a layup on UD's second offensive possession.
  • Toumani Camara hit a three-pointer off of a Malachi Smith assist to snap a Dayton scoring drought of 2:41.
  • Dayton's defense held the Patriots to a 3:00 scoring drought at the media timeout with 11:25 remaining in the half.
  • A Kobe Elvis free throw gave the Flyers their first lead of the game (17-16) with 10:18 to go.
  • George Mason took a seven-point lead with a minute to go until halftime. Dayton went 2:16 without scoring a field goal.
  • Holmes broke the ice with a lay-in with two seconds left. 

Second Half – George Mason 74, Dayton 69
  • Smith started the second half with a three from the corner, which was promptly followed by a layup by Holmes to tie the game a minute into the half.
  • The Patriots were unfazed as they quickly regained their five-point lead.
  • Dayton started the half making three straight field goals.
  • Holmes surpassed 20 points with his short-range jumper to put the Flyers within two, 44-42 with 13:09 to play.
  • Camara tied the game with a layup to make it 44-44 at the media timeout with 10:59 to go.
  • George Mason was held to a three-minute scoring drought while missing five field goal attempts in a row at the media timeout. 
  • Koby Brea hit a three from the corner to give the Flyers their first lead of the half (47-44) coming out of the media timeout at the 10:35 mark.
  • Mike Sharavjamts hit a three pointer from the top of the key off of a Camara assist to give the Flyers a six-point lead and their largest lead of the night (51-45 with 9:12 to go.)
  • GMU erased that lead and tied the game 56-56 with 6:01 left in the game.
  • The next 16 possessions over five minutes and 18 seconds featured five ties and five lead changes.
  • Holmes broke his all-time collegiate scoring record (32) with a free throw with 2:02 to play. He ended the game with 34.
  • The Patriots scored a layup with 43 seconds to go to take a two-point lead.  From there, George Mason made all six of its free throws while Dayton was 0-for-2.
  • Malachi Smith hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to make it a one-points game (70-69), but Mason hit four freebies in the last 4.3 seconds to hand the Flyers their second home loss of the year,  

BY THE NUMBERS
  • 34 – DaRon Holmes II set a personal best with 34 points tonight.  He was 11-of 17 from the field and 12-of-18 from the line.
  • 58% Both teams shot 58% from the field in the game.
  • 59% – Dayton finished shooting 59% from the charity stripe(16-27), its lowest mark in A-10 play this season.
  • 22 – Both the Flyers and the Patriots had 22 rebounds. Holmes and Toumani Camara led Dayton with six each.
  • 5 Malachi Smith led UD with five assists.
