BROOKLYN – The University of Dayton men's basketball team fell to VCU Sunday in the finals of the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, 68-56.
DaRon Holmes II had 28 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots in the loss, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
First Half – Dayton 36, VCU 30
• In a half that featured eight lead changes, Dayton forced a turnover and then scored first on a post jumper by
DaRon Holmes II.
• VCU answered with a three-pointer, but then UD regained the lead (6-3 with 16:12 left) on a
Malachi Smith three-pointer.
• The Flyers took it out to four (11-7 with 12:47 left), and the Rams countered with five points of their own (12-11 with 10:50 to go).
• VCU took its largest lead of the half (18-15 with 7:44 remaining.
• Dayton scored the next seven.
Mustapha Amzil assisted on a Holmes dunk and then scored five of his own to make the score Dayton 22, VCU 15 with 6:09 to go.
• UD led 26-20 at the five-minute mark and maintained the six-point advantage the rest of the half.
Second Half – VCU 68, Dayton 56
• The second half had fi e lead changes in the first 10 minutes.
• The Flyers scored the first five points of the second half in the first 61 seconds of the second half to take a 41-30 lead.
• VCU then outscored Dayton 14-2 in he next four minutes and 33 seconds.
• UD scored the next four points to lead 47-44 with 13:31 to go, followed by VCU regaining the lead (49-47 at the 11:09 mark.
• The Flyers took their last lead with 10;12 left on a three-pointer by Holmes.
• Dayton's only points the rest of the way came on six free throws by Holmes.
• The game remained a one-possession game until the 4:47 mark, and VCU outscored UD 8-0 over the final 3:16.
BY THE NUMBERS
• DaRon Homes II played all 40 minutes, with 28 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and a season-best-tying five blocked shots.
• He had 65 points, 31 rebounds and 12 blocked shots in the three games.

Toumani Camara joined Holmes on the All-Tournament Team, Camara had 51 points and also had 31 rebounds.

Mustapha Amzil was the only other Flyer in double figures with 17 points (15 in the first half).
