Women’s Basketball Loses In A-10 Second Round To Richmond

That Ends The 2022-23 Campaign For The Flyers

WILMINGTON, Del.  – The University of Dayton women's basketball team ended their postseason with a loss to No. 5 seed Richmond Thursday at the Atlantic 10 Championships Second Round.

The Flyers (7-21) completed their A-10 run while the Spiders (19-9) move on to face No. 4 seed Fordham Friday.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 11, Richmond 11
  • Richmond struck first with a steal and a layup to take the initial lead on the first possession, but Dayton quickly answered with a drive from junior Anyssa Jones.
  • The two teams then traded threes including a deep three at the end of the shot clock by senior Sydney Freeman.
  • By the media timeout, the Flyers held a 7-5lead while the Spiders were on a scoring drought.
  • Richmond managed to take the lead back with just under two minutes on the clock, 11-9, with UD suffering a three-minute drought.
  • Freeman got a steal and layup at the buzzer to tie the game up at 11-11.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 29, Richmond 27
  • The Spiders started the quarter with an and-one to take the 14-11 advantage, but the Flyers responded with a bucket from sophomore Arianna Smith and a three from junior Taisiya Kozlova.
  • Richmond called a timeout with 6:55 to play as Dayton led 19-17.
  • The two teams then switched off leading in the game for the next few minutes, before Richmond took a three-point lead at 25-22 with 3:46 to play.
  • Smith took over in the second, scoring 11 points in the quarter alone. She became the first player in double digits in the game.
  • The Flyers held the Spiders without a field goal for the final 3:44.
  • UD shot 38 percent in the first half and 50 percent from three while UR was 33 percent overall and 18 percent from behind the arc. The Flyers also had a 24-18 rebounding advantage.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 42, Richmond 45
  • Smith picked up right where she left off with a drive and basket to add to Dayton's lead.
  • Richmond quickly countered though and pulled ahead 35-34.
  • From there, the lead would go back-and-forth all the way to the media timeout with neither team willing to budge as UD held a 40-39 advantage.
  • Freeman became the second Flyer in double figures with 10 points.
  • The following three minutes saw a scoring drought for Dayton as they went 0-for-5 and Richmond pulled ahead 43-40.
4th Quarter: Dayton 60, Richmond 71
  • The Spiders extended their lead to four points while the Flyers were 0-for-4 early on in the fourth.
  • Freeman hit a big three at the 7:04 mark to pull back within one, 50-49. Jones followed up with a corner three of her own to give UD the lead once again.
  • By the media break, Dayton trailed Richmond 56-54 with 4:41 to go in regulation.
  • The Spiders struck out of the timeout and pushed the margin back to four as the clock ticked under three minutes.
  • UD called another timeout with 2:51 to play as Richmond led by six with a 6-0 run and 2:39 Flyer drought. The timeout worked as redshirt junior Destiny Bohanon hit a corner three to cut the deficit in half.
  • Richmond hit a couple of big threes in the final two minutes that would seal the Flyers' fate.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
18 – Sydney Freeman scored 18 points for the second straight game and third time this year, tying a season high.
15 and 12 – Arianna Smith scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds for a double-double.
11 – Anyssa Jones and Destiny Bohanon both had 11 points each.
42 – The Spiders had 42 points in the paint.

KEY STAT
57.1% - Richmond shot 57.1 percent in the second half compared to Dayton's 35.3 percent.
