Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short At UMass

The Flyers Fall To 0-3 In A-10 Play

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton women's basketball team fought to the end, but were unable to complete the rally in the loss at Massachusetts Tuesday.

The Flyers (6-8, 0-3 A-10) still look for their first Atlantic 10 win while the Minutewomen (3-11, 1-1 A-10) got their first.

KEY MOMENT
Final Three Minutes – As Dayton fought its way back into the game, UMass hit its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, UMass 13
  • UD won the tip and graduate student Mariah Perez went to the line on the first possession of the game to give the Flyers the initial lead.
  • UMass was able to answer and take its first lead while Dayton committed three turnovers over the next two minutes.
  • Dayton didn't make its first field goal of the contest until the 6:53 mark with an and-one from senior Anyssa Jones tying the game up at 4-4.
  • Junior Arianna Smith followed with a jumper at the top of the key to put UD back on top.
  • Redshirt senior got a couple of contested buckets in the paint to give her seven for the game to lead the Flyers and put them up 13-7 with just over three minutes to play.
  • The two teams combined for 12 free throws in the quarter, but it was Dayton that shot 60 percent to UMass' 36 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 32, UMass 32
  • The Flyers and Minutewomen traded baskets and leads back-and-forth over the first few minutes of the second quarter.
  • Smith got an and-one and Jones got a rebound and putback to give UD the 23-19 lead at the 6:18 mark.
  • Jones was shooting a free throw for her own and-one at the media timeout and the Flyers had their biggest lead of the game at six.
  • UMass answered once again and tied it up at 26-26 with 3:44 to play.
  • Smith was the first Flyer to reach double digits with her 11th point of the game on 5-of-5 shooting.
  • The Minutewomen scored at the buzzer to tie the game up at the half.
  • Bohanon (11 pts), Jones (9 pts), and Smith (11 pts) combined for 31 of Dayton's 32 points.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 52, UMass 55
  • UMass scored the first five points of the half to pull ahead, but Perez answered with an and-one.
  • The Minutewomen jumped out to a four-point advantage, their biggest of the game up to that point.
  • By the media break, the Flyers trailed 48-44 after a strong defensive stop. Both teams were shooting 49 percent through midway in the third.
  • With the margin at six, junior Ivy Wolf drilled back-to-back threes to tie the game at 52-52.
  • UMass hit a late three to take the lead into the final quarter.
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, UMass 76
  • On a 5-0 run, the Minutewomen were able to extend their lead to eight with 7:46 to play, their biggest of the game.
  • UMass then was able to get it to double-digits after a called timeout.
  • With 4:53 on the clock and the media break, the Flyers faced a 62-52 deficit.
  • Dayton's first points of the fourth came at the 4:42 mark on a free throw.
  • UMass held the big lead despite going over five minutes without a field goal.
  • Bohanon got another and-one with 1:48 on the clock to make it a 66-61 game.
  • In the end, UD just ran out of time to complete the rally.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
19 and 11 – Arianna Smith led the Flyers and recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a carer-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. She was also 8-of-10 from the floor.
31 of 32 – Destiny Bohanon, Anyssa Jones, and Arianna Smith combined for 31 of Dayton's first 32 points.
31 to 29 – Dayton outrebounded UMass 31 to 29 in the contest.
