NASHVILLE - The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up the 2024 Music City Classic with a tough 62-56 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore Monday morning.
The Flyers (4-2) end their two-game winning streak while the Hawks (4-2) extend theirs to three games.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, UMES 13
- With physical play early on, both teams got off to a slow start offensively. UMES was the first to strike at the 8:34 mark.
- Dayton didn't get its first points until a pair of free throws by graduate student Rikki Harris with 6:53 on the clock and the Flyers down 5-0.
- By the media timeout, UD trailed 7-4 with all four points coming from the free throw line by Harris.
- The Flyers recorded their first field goal of the game at the 2:55 mark on a layup by freshman Molly O'Riordan off the nice dish from junior Nayo Lear, making it an 8-7 Dayton lead.
- Another two free throws from senior Ivy Wolf tied the game up at 13-13 with under a minute to go in the opening quarter.
- A big corner three from sophomore Ajok Madol off another assist from Lear put UD ahead 16-13.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 26, UMES 25
- Neither team was able to score in the opening minute and a half with the physicality continuing to be the theme throughout and fouls mounting.
- Dayton's first points once again came from the charity stripe with a free throw by Wolf
- The Hawks hit a big three with 6:07 on the clock to pull ahead 20-17.
- Midway through the second, it was a 22-20 UMES advantage.
- Wolf drilled a transition three out of the break to give Dayton the 23-22 lead with over three to go in the half.
- Freshman Jayda Johnson hit a corner three as the shot clock expired and made it a 25-25 Flyer advantage at the break.
- Wolf led the Flyers with 14 points while Harris had four points. UD only shot 23 percent from the field, but were 91 percent from the free throw line.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 43, UMES 47
- Dayton and UMES traded blows in the early second half keeping the game within one possession.
- The Hawks managed to go on a run to take a 35-27 lead by the 6:50 mark.
- A three by Wolf ended the skid for the Flyers.
- At the media break, UD faced a 39-33 deficit.
- With 2:50 on the clock, UMES extended its lead to 44-37 as the Flyers went cold from the floor.
- Dayton closed the gap to five with under a minute to go in the third.
- Both teams finished hot with UD going 3-for-3 and UMES going 5-for-7 down the stretch.
4th Quarter: Dayton 56, UMES 62
- The Flyers struck first in the fourth with a three from Wolf to make it a one-point game and giving her a season-high 24 for the game.
- The game remained tied at 47-47 over the next few minutes.
- The Hawks scored their first points of the quarter with free throws at the 5:33 mark.
- UMES pulled ahead by six with 2:38 on the clock, 56-50, amidst a 1-for-10 stretch for Dayton.
- The Flyers tried to foul their way back into the game, but the Hawks converted from the line to hold on for the victory.
