Women’s Basketball Ends Season In Second Round Loss

The Flyers Fell To No. 6 Seed Rhode Island

HENRICO, Va. – The University of Dayton Women's basketball team went up against No. 6 seed Rhode Island Thursday evening and came up short
 
The No. 11 seed Flyers (12-19, 5-13 A-10) finish their 2023-24 campaign while the Rams (19-13, 10-8 A-10) move on to the quarterfinals.
 
KEY MOMENT
Start of 4th – Rhode Island went on a 14-6 run in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to make it a double digit game.
 
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Rhode Island 13
  • Rhode Island struck first, but Dayton answered with a drive by junior Ivy Wolf to tie the game up two minutes into the contest.
  • Sophomore Nayo Lear followed suit with a jumper to give the Flyers their first lead of the game.
  • At the media break, UD trailed by just one, 9-8, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
  • Both teams went cold from the field as neither squad could score during a two-plus minute stretch.
  • Lear's second drive of the game ended the skid for the Flyers at the 1:33 mark.
  • Senior Anyssa Jones took the steal to the other end of the floor and scored at the buzzer to put UD ahead after 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, Rhode Island 30
  • Freshman Eve Fiala used a nice post move to extend UD's lead early in the second quarter.
  • Lear hit two more deep twos to make it a 20-16 Flyer lead with just over seven minutes on the clock.
  • URI managed to tie it up at 21-21 before Wolf answered with a layup to keep UD in control.
  • With 3:59 in the quarter, the Rams took the lead back 26-25 while the Flyers were on an 0-for-7 stretch.
  • Redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon got her first bucket of the game with 1:54 to play to end the skid.
  • Freshman Riley Rismiller drilled a jumper at the free throw line at the :34 mark to put the Flyers on top 31-30.
  • Lear led UD with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting while the team shot 47 percent overall and held URI to 29 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 48, Rhode Island 51
  • Smith scored a contest bucket on the first possession before Dayton got a pair of defensive stops on the other end to get some early momentum.
  • The Rams were able to respond and took a 34-33 lead by the 7:09 mark amidst a three-plus minute drought by the Flyers.
  • Midway through the third quarter, UD trailed by just one, 41-40.
  • The Rams were able to push the margin to five at 48-43 with under two to go in the quarter before Jones hit a corner three to keep the Flyers within a possession.
  • Fiala had a crucial block on the final play of the third to give her a career-high five on the game.
4th Quarter: Dayton 57, Rhode Island 70
  • Rhode Island got the gap back to five on its first points of the fourth, but Fiala matched it with a bucket of her own.
  • Dayton was forced to call a timeout with 6:55 to play as URI led 60-52.
  • The Rams hit a big three with 4:52 on the clock to make it an 11-point game.
  • The Flyers just did not have enough scoring down the stretch including a 2:11 drought in a crucial moment.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
5 – Eve Fiala recorded a career-high five blocks.
12 and 8 – Arianna Smith had team-highs of 12 points and eight rebounds.
10 – Nayo Lear added 10 points and five assists.
39% - Both teams shot 39 percent from the field.
38% to 13% - URI shot 38 percent from three point range while UD shot just 13 percent.
 
KEY STATS
27% - The Flyers were 3-of-11 from the free throw line for 27 percent.
