DAYTON, Ohio. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosted Belmont University Sunday afternoon and battled to a tough 72-66 defeat at UD Arena.
The Flyers (2-2) drop their second game of the year while the Bruins (2-2) moved to .500.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 7, Belmont 16
- Sophomore Olivia Leung had a buzzer-beating three-pointer to start the Flyers off scoring.Â
- Belmont jumped out to an early lead, finding much of its success in the paint in the opening quarter.
- Junior Fatima Ibrahim converted a layup, bringing the Flyers within seven, 14-7.
- Flyers faced a nine-point deficit after the opening 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 25, Belmont 35
- Senior Shantavia Dawkins made the first three-pointer 20 seconds into the second quarter.
- Senior Nayo Lear continued to push the tempo with her drive and bucket. Â
- Leung nailed her second three-pointer, leading the way for Dayton.
- The Flyers were outscored 20-8 on points in the paint in the opening half.
- Ibrahim, Lear, and Leung each had six points for the hosts.
- Belmont shot 44.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes while Dayton shot 31.8 percent.

3rd Quarter: Dayton 46, Belmont 49
- The Flyers slowly chipped away at the lead to start the second half, getting the basket much easier.
- Ibrahim continued her strong outing with another contest bucket in the paint.
- Graduate student Maliyah Johnson made her Dayton debut, and scored a jumper for her first points as a Flyer.
- Dayton closed the gap to three before the end of the third with a 6-0 run.
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, Belmont 72
- Graduate student Nicole Stephens got things going in the fourth with her first points of the game.
- Leung hit a pair of free throws and added a basket to make it a 55-54 ball game.
- Senior Shantavia Dawkins stepped up big off the bench and scored to get the crowd back behind the Flyers.
- Despite only one free throw attempt going into the fourth, Belmont went 9-of-10 down the stretch to clinch the game.
