Men's Hoops Soars Over Marquette In OT, 77-71

Senior Javon Bennett Scored 19 In The Road Victory

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team pulled out a thrilling overtime victory over Marquette University on Wednesday night, topping the Golden Eagles 77-71 at Fiserv Forum. 
 
The Flyers (4-1) jumped ahead in the overtime period thanks to triples from seniors Keonte Jones and Jacob Conner, and after Jones swatted away a Marquette (3-3) dunk attempt, fellow senior Javon Bennett sealed the game with three free throws.

Bennett led the way in the score column for the Flyers with 19 points, while junior De'Shayne Montgomery scored 18. Redshirt freshman Malcolm Thomas chipped in a career-best eight points, while senior Jordan Derkack had eight points and four rebounds.

UD shot .531 from the floor for the game, including a blistering .667 in the first half, while Marquette shot just .385 for the game and was 1-for-7 in the decisive overtime.
 
GAME RECAP
First Half – Dayton 39, Marquette 34
  • Junior De'Shayne Montgomery scored the Flyers' first five points of the game, putting UD ahead early.
  • Montgomery scored seven of UD's first 10 points, resulting in a 12-7 advantage.
  • Redshirt freshman Malcolm Thomas pushed the lead to seven with a pair of free throws.
  • Montgomery knocked down another triple to give the Flyers their biggest lead of the half at 20-11.
  • A 14-0 run over 1:55 erased Dayton's early lead and gave Marquette their first lead since the first basket of the game.
  • Another Montgomery bucket with 2:52 to go erased a six-point deficit and gave Dayton a one-point lead.
  • After a free throw from Jaiun Simon, Thomas rocked the rim with a slam to put UD on top by three with a minute to go in the half.
  • Bennett knocked down a fall-away jumper with :04 on the clock to give Dayton a 39-34 lead.
  • The Flyers used a 15-4 run over the final 4:14 to give Dayton a 5-point advantage
Second Half – Dayton 68, Marquette 68
  • Senior Jordan Derkack made a free throw and three-pointer to put Dayton up 43-36 under two minutes into the half.
  • Sophomore Amael L'Etang converted inside the paint to put Dayton up nine.
  • Bennett gave UD its largest lead of the game with a dazzling drive in the paint, putting the Flyers up 47-36.
  • After Marquette made it a nine-point game, senior Jacob Conner knocked down a three to put Dayton ahead by 12.
  • The Golden Eagles did not go away, using an 11-2 run to bring the game back within three with just under five minutes to go.
  • UD responded with a 5-0 run to go up eight, but Marquette tied the score in less than two minutes at 66-66.
  • Jones swiped a steal and finished a contested lay-up to give UD a slim 68-66 lead with just one minute to go.
  • Marquette tied the game on a dunk with :40 seconds remaining.
  • Neither team was able to get off a quality shot and the game went to the first overtime of the season for the Flyers.
Overtime – Dayton 77, Marquette 71
  • Jones knocked down a three to put Dayton on top to start overtime, 71-68.
  • The Flyers scored the next basket of OT when Conner drilled a triple to push the score to 74-68.
  • Jones came up big on the defensive end as well, swatting a dunk attempt by Marquette that would have made it a one-possession game.
  • Bennett calmly sank a pair of free throws, then added one more to ice the game.
