DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team took down Evansville in their final non-conference matchup of the season Sunday afternoon at UD Arena.
The Flyers (7-5) survived a back-and-forth battle with the Purple Aces (2-10) for their second consecutive win as they head into conference play.
Dayton was led by
Nayo Lear's career-high 27 points and
Ajok Madol's first collegiate double-double of 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Olivia Leung also scored in double figures as she tallied 11 points, nine of which came from behind the arc.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 21, Evansville 20
- Nayo Lear got the Flyers on the board first as she converted one of two opportunities from the free-throw line.
- Evansville jumped ahead with a 7-0 run, but Molly O'Riordan ended the run with Dayton's first field goal of the afternoon off of an assist from Lear.
- Lear then finished a layup through contact to cut the deficit to 9-5 with 6:25 left in the quarter.
- Lear continued her strong start, finishing a layup through a foul and converting the and-one opportunity to bring the Flyers within one. Lear had scored six of Dayton's first eight points.
- It was Lear scoring again, this time with a fast break layup to tie the contest at 11 with 2:41 left in the quarter.
- Olivia Leung then regained the lead for the Flyers with a three-pointer off an assist from M.G. Talle.
- Evansville responded with three of their own, but O'Riordan continued the back-and-forth battle with a layup to push UD back ahead.
- The Purple Aces would regain the lead at 17-16, but a Leung drive to the hoop resulted in two points and another lead change in favor of the Flyers.
- A successful and-one for Evansville saw them once again take the lead, but Leung hit a three from the wing as time expired in the quarter, giving UD a 21-20 advantage at the break.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 40, Evansville 34
- Lear continued her strong performance to start the second quarter as she scored the first two baskets of the period, bringing her total to 12 points on the afternoon.
- Fatima Ibrahim got herself in the scoring column with a strong layup as the Flyers took a 27-22 lead.
- Lear then made her sixth field goal of the game as she received a pass from Ajok Madol while cutting to the hoop for a layup to give UD their largest lead of the contest at 29-22.
- Evansville would cut the lead to just four, but O'Riordan grabbed a steal and took it the distance for two points to push the Flyers ahead 32-26 with four minutes remaining in the half.
- An 8-0 run would see Evansville retake the lead, but Lear tied it back up when she got up high for an offensive rebound that she put back for two.
- Lear would increase the Flyer lead to 38-34 with 54 seconds left on the clock, as she converted another layup through a foul and converted the and-one opportunity, giving her 20 points in the first half.
- Madol then hit a floater in the final seconds of the period, giving UD a six-point lead going into halftime.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 60, Evansville 48
- Madol opened the second half scoring for the Flyers with a layup through a foul to put the lead back to six at 42-36.
- After an Evansville response, Ibrahim converted a layup, making the UD advantage 44-38 with 8:25 left in the quarter.
- Lear scored her first points of the second half via a floater to give Dayton their largest lead of the game at 48-38.
- Shantavia Dawkins then knocked down a corner three on the next possession to increase the lead to 13 and push the Flyer run to 9-0.
- Dawkins then scored her second consecutive field goal to push the run to 11-0 and the lead to 15 at 53-38 with 5:30 left in the quarter.
- Madol scored off of a nice move that got her inside for a layup as the Flyers got their lead back to 15 at 55-40 with 3:37 left in the quarter.
- Leung then gave Dayton their largest lead of the game at 58-40 with her third three-pointer of the game.
- After six unanswered points from Evansville, O'Riordan pushed the lead back to 14 at 60-46 with a putback layup after grabbing an offensive rebound.
4th Quarter: Dayton 75, Evansville 66
- The Flyers opened the final period cold, and Evansville got back within seven points, but Talle hit UD's first field goal of the quarter in the post, giving Dayton a 63-54 lead with 7:09 left to play.
- Madol finished in the post, her fourth field goal on four attempts, as the Flyers got the lead back into double digits at 65-54 with 4:13 remaining.
- After Evansville got within four at 67-63, the Flyers broke the Purple Aces' press as Nicole Stephens found Ibrahim for a layup.
- Lear then hit a pair of free throws to set a new career high of 25 points and extend the Flyer advantage to 71-64 in the final minute.
- Madol grabbed a steal off of an inbounds play and took it all the way to the hoop to make the lead 73-66 with 40 seconds left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Ajok Madol scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record her first collegiate double-double. That marks a new career high in rebounds for her.
25- The Flyers bench contributed 25 points en route to the win.

Nayo Lear scored a career high of 27 points, 20 of which came in the first half.
38- The Flyers grabbed 38 total rebounds in the game, their 10th game this season with at least 30 rebounds.

The Flyers will next play on New Year's Eve, Wednesday, Dec.31, when they travel to Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason. The game will tip off at noon.
