DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton Women's Basketball team earned an 81-72 win at home over Long Island University Sunday afternoon at UD Arena.
The Flyers (5-4) get back on the winning track while the Sharks (4-4) fall to .500 on the season.
Dayton fought back in the second half to earn an 81–72 win over LIU at UD Arena. The Flyers were led by
Nayo Lear, who scored 24 points, while plays from
Molly O'Riordan,
Nicole Stephens, and the UD bench helped the comeback.
GAME RECAP
1st Quarter – Dayton 13, LIU 22
- After a slow start for the Flyers, junior Ajok Madol hit a driving lay-up off the fast break.
- Dayton capitalized off a turnover as senior Nayo Lear knocked down a jumper in the paint.
- Madol with an open three at 4:49 gave the Flyers the lead for a score of 8-7.
- Junior Fatima Ibrahim, followed it up with a strong take to the rim, finishing a lay-up to add to the Flyers' momentum.
- Sophomore Molly O'Riordan added to the Flyers' score, knocking down a smooth jumper to extend the Dayton offense with 2:33 left on the clock.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 32, LIU 38
- Grad student Nicole Stephens drained a three-pointer to add to the Flyers' offense and cut into LIU's lead, Dayton 17, LIU 25
- Assisted by Lear, Freshman M.G. Talle went up for a lay-up at 6:15 to help close the gap for the Flyers.
- Stephens added her second three of the quarter, cutting LIU's lead to 10 with 4:21left from the 2nd quarter.
- Lear sank back-to-back free throws on the fast break, adding 4 more points for the Flyers.
- Johnson hit a buzzer beater three-pointer to close out the quarter for the Flyers.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 54, LIU 58
- Lear opens up the quarter for the Flyers with a jumper at 9:50 to help close the scoring gap.
- Starting the 3rd quarter strong, Molly O'Riordan is perfect from the free-throw line.
- Stephens drains a three-pointer to bring the Flyers just one point short of the Sharks. Flyers 39 sharks 40.
- O'Riordan hit a turnaround jumper in the paint, bringing the score 43-41, Sharks lead.
- Talle goes two for two at the line to keep the Flyers in the game.
- Sophomore Olivia Leung got the assist from Lear to sink a three with just under five minutes left in the quarter, bringing the Flyers to 46 points.
- Lear knocked down a three-pointer assisted by Talle.
- Johnson hits a jumper with 2:34 left in the quarter to bring the Flyers just short of the Sharks lead.
- Lear goes two-for-two at the line to tie the game, being the Flyers top scorer with 13 points.
4th Quarter: Dayton 81, LIU 72
- Lear with an easy lay-up to start the 4th quarter for the Flyers.
- Ibrahim scored on a second-chance lay-up bringing the Flyers two points away from the Sharks, Dayton 58, LIU 60.
- Madol found Lear for the assist, and Lear hit the lay-up to tie the game at 60 points.
- Talle brings the lead to the Flyers with a made lay-up off an LIU turnover.
- The Flyers' defense forced a stop, giving them a chance to score, and Dawkins capitalized by going two-for-two at the free-throw line.
- Stephens finished a fast-break lay-up off a turnover, giving the Flyers quick points and keeping the momentum going.
- The Sharks couldn't stop the Flyers' momentum, as Lear knocked down back-to -back jumpers, extending Dayton's lead to eight points.
- O'Riordan nailed a fast-break jumper, and the Flyers' crowd went loud as Dayton held their lead, with 3:46 on the clock.
- Lear scored her 23rd point of the game as she went 100% from the line.
- O'Riordan sinks a three with 2:07 left in the game to give the Flyers a nine point lead.
- Coming out of the 30-second timeout, Madol buried a three to increase the Flyer's lead to 80-70 with 0:49 left on the clock.
