DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team hosted Saint Joseph's on Wednesday evening and earned the 74-65 victory on Senior Night.
The Flyers (16-12, 10-7 A-10) upset the Hawks (21-7, 12-5 A-10) and earned a crucial conference victory.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 14, Saint Joseph's 22
- The game opened with both teams exchanging turnovers before graduate student Rikki Harris was able to put the Flyers on the board with a spin-around jumper.
- After a gritty three-and-a-half-minute scoring drought, Rikki Harris battled through traffic and powered in a tough layup, sparking the Flyers' push to regain momentum.
- Harris grabbed an offensive rebound and confidently sank a mid-range jumper, adding crucial points for the Flyers.
- On a roll, graduate student Nicole Stephens drained a jumper to cap off a 10-0 Flyers run, while holding the Hawks scoreless for over four minutes.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 38, Saint Joseph's 35
- Senior Arianna Smith opened the second quarter with a strong layup, setting the tone for the Flyers.
- Smith responded again, battling through the Hawks' defense to sink a tough jumper.
- Sophomore Jayda Johnson drove to the basket and finished with a smooth layup to earn her first points of the game.
- Battling a turnover, junior Nayo Lear snatched the ball and powered through for a strong layup.
- Johnson created space and knocked down a smooth three-pointer, off a perfect assist from freshman Olivia Leung to bring the game within three.
- Coming out of the media timeout, Johnson wasted no time, sinking another three-pointer off a crisp assist from senior Ivy Wolf.
- On fire, the Flyers kept the momentum rolling as Wolf delivered a sneaky pass to Harris, who quickly found Johnson outside the arc—she buried another three, making Dayton 6 of their last 8 and forcing the Hawks to call a timeout with 2:52 left to play.
- In a buzzer-beater for the possession, Johnson hit a clutch three-pointer, sending the stadium into a frenzy and bringing the Flyers within one point.
- Leung charged to the bucket, finishing with a tough layup to give the Flyers the lead with just one minute left of play.
- Harris snatched the ball from the Hawks on a breakaway, racing down the court. With just three seconds left in the half, the Flyers quickly inbounded the ball, and Harris finished with a powerful layup, bringing a fiery end to the half.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 57, Saint Joseph's 53
- The Flyers had a slow start, enduring a two-minute scoring drought that allowed the Hawks to take the lead, forcing Dayton to call a timeout.
- Smith fought hard on the boards, securing a rebound and finishing a layup to end the Hawks' 9-0 run.
- Stephens knocked down a smooth jumper right out of the media timeout, keeping the Flyers in rhythm.
- After battling through heavy defense, Lear pushed the ball down the court and fought to sink a clutch jumper, tying up the game.Right after, Lear drove hard to the bucket, drew a foul, and calmly knocked down the free throw for a clutch and-one play.
- Ivy Wolf drove inside, kicked it back out, and found Nicole Stephens wide open—she drained the three with confidence.
- Backing down to the bucket, senior Shannon Wheeler powered through and finished with a strong layup.
- Running around the arc to get the ball back in play, Stephens found Harris, who sank a three-pointer
4th Quarter: Dayton 74, Saint Joseph's 65
- Stephens broke the Flyers' two-minute scoring drought, sinking a much-needed three to open the quarter.
- Smith drove to the basket, drawing the foul and finishing with a powerful and-one layup.
- Wolf made a powerful charge to the basket, muscling her way in for a well-earned layup.
- In a smooth run up the court, Wolf found her space and confidently drained a three-pointer forcing the Hawks to take a timeout.
- To close out the game, Arianna Smith drove to the hoop and finished with a clutch layup with just one second remaining.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- 14- Jayda Johnson earned her career high of 14 points in this game, four of which also being a new season high of made three point field goals.
- 18- In the first minutes of the quarter, Dayton trailed by 18 points but ultimately coming back offensively and powering defensively to regain the lead early in the second quarter
