DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's basketball team topped the Davidson in a nail-biter on Tuesday night, pulling away in the final minute to turn aside the Wildcats 69-63 inside UD Arena.
Davidson inched ahead thanks to a layup with 51 seconds remaining in the contest when the momentum flipped. A technical foul called on a Wildcat sent junior Javon Bennett to the line, who promptly tied the score. On the next possession, Bennett took an inbounds pass from Enoch Cheeks, drove to the hoop and was fouled on a made layup, giving UD a 64-61 advantage.
In total, the Flyers connected on five of six free throws in the final 33 seconds of play to pull away to the six-point win.
Bennett, freshman Amaël L'Etang, and senior Nate Santos tied with a team-high of 13 points. L'Etang posted 13 rebounds while Posh Alexander contributed five assists.
First Half – Dayton 28, Davidson 26
- The Flyers had a quiet start to the game prior to senior Nate Santos layup at 17:32 to make it 3-2.
- Redshirt senior Posh Alexander found freshman Amaël L'Etang with a sharp pass leading to an electric dunk at 16:40.
- Alexander got the crowd roaring after a three-pointer to take a one-point lead over the Wildcats.
- The momentum continued after a dominant rebound from L'Etang turned into a layup.
- With a smooth pass from junior Javon Bennett to graduate student Zed Key, Key dunked the ball making it 11-8 Flyers.
- Santos kept the energy going with a three-point shot at 11:05 to make the score 16-12.
- Junior Jacob Conner converted two free throws at the 7:55 mark to bring the score to 18-14.
- The Flyers took back the lead 20-18 thanks to a Santos layup at the 6:21 mark.
- Alexander spun his way down the lane for a layup for a 24-20 lead with 4:41 remaining.
- Senior Enoch Cheeks cashed in from the line at 3:14 to extend the lead to 26-22.
- After a two-minute scoring drought, L'Etang converted the layup at 0:29 to give the Flyers a 28-24 lead with 21 seconds remaining.
Second Half – Dayton 69, Davidson 63
- Santos started the second half for the Flyers with a layup, to tie the game at 30-30.
- L'Etang converted two free throws after a technical foul at 17:37 to give the lead to the Flyers.
- The Flyers continued their run with a corner three from Alexander at 16:08 pushing the lead to 37-30.
- The crowd erupted after Bennett swished a three from the corner, growing the lead to double digits 42-32 at 14:39.
- Cheeks drove in and finished for a tough layup making it 44-36 at the 13:19 mark.
- Bennett pushed the lead back to eight after a three-pointer at 11:46.
- At 10:24, L'Etang got back to the line and cashed in one free throw to push Dayton's lead back to seven, 48-41.
- Dayton continued its success from the line with Key sinking both free throws at 9:04 to make the score 50-42.
- Conner converted the second chance layup at 5:50 to push the lead to 54-48.
- After Davidson cut the lead to a single point, Cheeks splashed a huge three making it 57-53.
- The scoring continued at 4:23 with a pretty finish by Santos extending the lead to 59-53.
- The Flyers stopped and 8-0 Wildcats run at 48 seconds, thanks to two clutch free throws from Bennett to tie the game at 61.
- An old-fashioned three-point play from Bennett gave Dayton a 64-61 lead with 46 seconds.
- Cheeks made one from the line after a clutch steal at 33 seconds to grow the lead to 65-61.
- Alexander cashed in two free throws at 24 seconds to make it a two possession game at 67-63.
- Cheeks put the nail in the coffin converting both free throws with 16 seconds to put the score at 69-63.
- A block by L'Etang and a rebound by Cheeks in the last 10 seconds closed out the game.
