RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team opened up its participation in the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship with a 60-45 victory over La Salle University in the second round.
The No. 6 seeded Flyers (18-12) keep their postseason alive while the No. 14 seeded Explorers (10-23) end their campaign.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 20, La Salle 12
- The Flyers got off to a strong start, forcing a shot clock violation on the first possession and then a basket by graduate student Rikki Harris on the other end.
- La Salle didn't get its first bucket until the 7:43 mark.
- At the midway point in the opening quarter, the score was 10-5 in favor of the Flyers.
- Dayton got its first six buckets from five different players.
- UD forced two shotclock violations and pushed its lead to 18-11 with under two to play.
- Six different Flyers scored in the first quarter, led by senior Arianna Smith with six points.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 31, La Salle 28
- Freshman Jayda Johnson scored the first points for UD in the second, making her the seventh on the scoresheet.
- The Explorers on the other hand suffered from a three-plus minute scoring drought.
- La Salle came alive though and closed the gap to six at 24-18 with 4:44 on the clock.
- Dayton suffered from a drought of its own for nearly four minutes before a Harris basket ended the skid.
- The Explorers hit a three and drew a foul to make it a three-point game at the half.
- UD shot 52 percent in the first half while holding La Salle to 36 percent.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 45, La Salle 35
- Both teams got off to a slow start to the second half, but UD got the first couple of baskets to push the margin to nine in the opening 2:30, forcing a La Salle timeout.
- By the media break, the Flyers were holding steady with a 39-33 advantage.
- The physicality of the game picked up and Dayton got into the bonus with 2:30 to go in the quarter.
- La Salle faced another three-plus minute drought as UD looked to add to its lead at the free throw line.
- Dayton ended the quarter on a 6-0 run despite going four minutes without a field goal.
4th Quarter: Dayton 60, La Salle 45
- Senior Ivy Wolf scored the first bucket of the fourth, making is six straight points for her dating back to the third.
- La Salle didn't get its first points until the 7:19 mark as UD was up 13.
- The Explorers cut it to nine with 3:31 and called their third timeout to try to game plan the final rally.
- In the end, Dayton was able to hold on while La Salle shot desperation threes.
KEY STATS
42 – Dayton scored 42 points in the paint while making just one three.
