Men’s Basketball Rolls Past Ramblers, 78–51

Junior De’Shayne Montgomery Led The Flyers With 21 Points

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men's basketball team put together a dominant second half to lead to a decisive 78-51 victory over Loyola Chicago on Friday night in the Epicenter of College Basketball, UD Arena. 
 
After holding a slim 31-30 lead at halftime, the Flyers (14-4, 5-0 A-10) pulled away with a dominant second half fueled by strong defense and efficient scoring. The Ramblers (5-14, 1-5 A-10) scored just 21 points in the second half and shot .286 from the floor, while UD shot a blistering .600 in the stanza.
 
A 10-0 run midway through the second half, highlighted by a Bryce Heard alley-oop, sent the Flyer Faithful into a frenzy, and Dayton cruised to the convincing home win while wearing their special edition "stealth mode" jerseys. 
 
Junior De'Shayne Montgomery led UD with 21 points on the night, while senior Javon Bennett added key shooting and playmaking with 19 points, four assists and three steals. Redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon added a career-best 14 points while pulling down six rebounds, and senior Keonte Jones had a seven-point, nine-rebound outing.
 
Dayton forced Loyola into 19 turnovers for the game and held the Ramblers to .333 shooting for the game. The Flyers, meanwhile, shot .442 (23-of-52) from the floor and .435 (10-of-23) from downtown.
 
GAME RECAP
First Half – Dayton 31, Loyola 30
  • Redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon got the scoring started for the Flyers with the first basket of the game.
  • The two sides traded barbs for the next 10 minutes, as the first half featured four lead changes and four ties.
  • Freshman Damon Friery ended a Ramblers' scoring run thanks to a three-pointer, bringing the score to 13-11
  • A layup from senior Keonte Jones brought UD back within two with 8:40 to go in the half.
  • Moments later, De'Shayne Montgomery swiped a pass from the Ramblers and flew into a dunk on the other end to tie the game at 17-17.
  • Simon knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Flyers ahead, but Loyola struck back with a quick 6-0 run to take a 23-19 lead with 6:13 to go in the half.
  • Bennett brought it back to a two-point game with a pair of free throws at the 5:27 mark.
  • Montgomery grabbed a defensive rebound and raced the length of the court for an impressive dunk to tie the score, 23-23.
  • Another 5-0 run from Loyola set Dayton behind with just under three minutes to go, but a pair of Simon free throws brought the score to 28-25.
  • Simon knocked down two more from the charity stripe to make it a one-point game.
  • Bennett gave the Flyers the lead for good with 2:06 remaining in the half, twisting through the paint and making a layup off a Simon assist.
  • Made free throws from Bennett and Jacob Conner and a pair of makes from the Ramblers brought the score to 31-30 at the break.
 
Second Half – Dayton 78, Loyola 51
  • Dayton wasted no time getting going in the second, as Bennett made a layup to go ahead 33-30 just 18 seconds into the half.
  • Sophomore Bryce Heard converted an old-fashioned three-point play to push the UD lead to 36-30. 
  • Jones connected on a three to go ahead 39-32. 
  • The lead ballooned to 10 when Simon sank a three-pointer of his own at 16:49.
  • Heard connected on a layup to go ahead 12 just a minute later.
  • With a 55-45 advantage, the Flyers struck with an 13-0 run, highlighted by an alley-oop from Bennett, brought UD Arena to its feet, and gave UD a 62-45 advantage with 3:52 to go.
  • Dayton pushed its lead to the largest of the game when Friery connected on his second three of the game with :37 remaining, putting the Flyers up 78-51.
  • Montgomery scored a three-pointer with 1:57 in the second half
