Men’s Basketball Wins Wire-To-Wire At George Mason, 82-67

Senior Javon Bennett Led The Flyers With 22 Points

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Dayton men's basketball team picked up an impressive road Atlantic 10 win over George Mason on Wednesday night, leading wire-to-wire to ultimately upend the Patriots 82-67 at EagleBank Arena.
 
The Flyers (17-9, 8-5 A-10) shot a lights out 55.8% from the floor in the game, including 52.4% from beyond the three-point line. UD's win snapped the Patriots' (21-6, 9-5 A-10) four-game winning streak over Dayton and was GMU's second home loss this season.
 
Dayton was led by senior Javon Bennett, who poured in 22 points to lead all scorers. Sophomore Amaël L'Etang scored 22 points and had six rebounds, and junior De'Shayne Montgomery finished the night with 10.
 
GAME RECAP
 
1st Half – Dayton 43, George Mason 36
  • Sophomore Amaël L'Etang got the Flyers on the board on their first possession of the game with a layup.
  • L'Etang followed with another layup on a feed from redshirt sophomore Jaiun Simon to make it 4-0 UD.
  • After GMU scored on a pair of free throws, senior Javon Bennett knocked down a triple to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Junior De'Shayne Montgomery finished a fast-break layup to put UD ahead 9-2.
  • The Flyers added two more when senior Jordan Derkack connected on a pair of free throws to make it an 11-3 game with 14:54 to go in the half.
  • A 7-0 run from the Patriots brought the score back within one, but L'Etang converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put Dayton back up 14-10.
  • L'Etang connected on a three on the Flyers' next possession to go ahead 17-10.
  • George Mason scored five consecutive points and Dayton responded with another triple from Javon Bennett to go back up 20-15.
  • L'Etang put UD back up by five with a basket to make it 23-18.
  • Montgomery finished a reverse layup through contact to keep UD ahead 25-20 with 5:59 to go.
  • The two sides traded three-point barbs, as Montgomery and Bennett connected from long range to put the Flyers up 31-28 with 3:55 remaining.
  • Senior Keonte Jones flushed a fastbreak dunk on an alley-oop from Bennett to put UD ahead 39-33 with 42.6 remaining in the half.
 
2nd Half – Dayton 82, George Mason 67
  • After the Patriots scored a basket to start the half, L'Etang came through at the end of the shot clock with a deep three-pointer to put Dayton up 46-38.
  • Montgomery hit a floater and converted the old-fashioned three-point play to give UD a 49-38 advantage.
  • Senior Jacob Conner knocked down a corner three on his first shot of the game to put the Flyers up 52-40 with 16:08 to go.
  • After a four-minute lull in scoring, Dayton got back on track when Bennett converted an and-one to put the Flyers up 56-44 with 10:08 to go.
  • Sophomore Bryce Heard knocked down a tough pull-up jumper for his first basket of the day, putting UD ahead 58-44.
  • After a Mason basket, Bennett cashed his fourth three of the contest to give Dayton a 61-46 advantage with 9:12 to go.
  • Simon rolled in a three-pointer to keep UD's advantage at 16 with 8:21 to go.
  • Jones flushed a dunk to give the Flyers a 66-50 lead with 7:01 remaining.
  • After Bennett made a pair of technical foul free throws, Jones finished strong at the rim to make it an 18-point game.
  • Derkack drilled a three to give Dayton it's biggest lead of the game at 73-54 with just over five minutes to play.
  • L'Etang brought UD's advantage back to 18 with a layup.
  • George Mason went on a quick run, but Bennett nailed his fifth three-pointer of the game to stop the run and give the Flyers a 78-62 advantage.
  • L'Etang capped the scoring with a pair of layups, giving him a career-high 21 points.
