HENRICO, Va. - The University of Dayton women's basketball team continued its postseason run as it took on No. 2 seed George Mason Friday night in Virginia and fought to a thrilling overtime 87-85 loss to the Patriots.
The Flyers (17-14) end their season with their heads high while the Patriots (22-8) continue their postseason.
GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 17, George Mason 20
- Sophomore Molly O'Riordan got a steal and found junior Ajok Madol for the opening bucket of the game and initial lead.
- She then took a pass from senior Nayo Lear and knocked down a three to put UD up 5-4 at the 7:30 mark of the first.
- Madol then drilled a three of her own with 6:20 on the clock to put the Flyers up 10-6.
- After a fast start to the game, it was 12-11 at the media break.
- All but two baskets for the Patriots came from Kennedy Harris as she put GMU up 15-12 with 3:30 to go before a three from sophomore Olivia Leung tied it up.
- Mason finished on a run to take a 20-17 lead while shooting 56 percent compared to Dayton's 70 percent.
2nd Quarter: Dayton 38, George Mason 32
- Lear scored on the first possession of the second for the Flyers to cut it to one.
- The two teams continued to trade buckets back-and-forth with neither team willing to concede ground.
- Madol scored on a fast break with 6:47 on the clock to tie it up at 24-24.
- She followed up with a three to take a 27-24 lead midway through the second, becoming the first Flyer in double digits.
- Dayton kept punching back at anything Mason was throwing at them and used a 12-2 run over 4:30 to pull ahead 31-26 heading into the final three minutes.
- A buzzer-beating layup by senior Shantavia Dawkins gave the Flyers a six-point cushion at the half.
- UD shot 57 percent in the first half while GMU shot 45 percent. Madol had a team-high 13 points while O'Riordan chipped in 10. They combined for 9-of-10 from the floor.
3rd Quarter: Dayton 63, George Mason 55
- Grad student Nicole Stephens picked up where her teammates leftoff and hit a big three to start the second half.
- A contested bucket by O'Riordan put Dayton up 43-34 in the first two minutes of the third.
- George Mason was forced to call a timeout with 7:52 on the clock as UD extended the margin to double digits.
- Dayton slowed the pace down as it looked to make every possession count for George Mason as the Flyers kept the Patriots just out of striking distance.
- A three-point play by Mason with 5:17 to go cut it to five at 49-44.
- A steal and finish by Leung put Dayton back on top by nine with just over three to go.
- Ibrahim became the third Flyer in double-digits as she had a big third quarter, giving her 12 in the game.
4th Quarter: Dayton 75, George Mason 75
- Ibrahim kept it going and scored the first basket for Dayton in the fourth.
- The Flyers called a timeout with 7:36 on the clock as the Patriots narrowed the margin to six, 65-59.
- Lear took control as the senior captain and steadied the team as she scored four straight points for Dayton to get the margin back to double-digits.
- Meanwhile the Patriots struggled during a three-minute scoring drought.
- The Flyers controlled the tempo down the final stretch and limited any opportunity for the Patriots to put a run together.
- Mason managed to tie it up at 73-73 with under two on the clock before taking a 75-73 lead with 1:03 left.
- Lear drove with six seconds left and tied it up at 75-75.
Overtime: Dayton 85, George Mason 87
- Mason got the first bucket, but the Flyers quickly answered. That was the script for the next two minutes with the Patriots holding the narrow edge.
- O'Riordan then scored with 30 seconds left to tie it up again at 85-85.
- The Patriots were the last team to get the ball though and hit a buzzer-beater to win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
53 – Dayton shot 53 percent in the effort while holding George Mason to 49 percent.
5 – Dayton had five players in double digits, the most in a game this season.

Fatima Ibrahim led the Flyers with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
26-6 – Mason outscored UD 26-6 on points off turnovers.
