    Assistant Coach
Nick Irvin was announced as an assistant coach on May 14, 2026.

From Coach Grant: "We are thrilled to welcome Nick Irvin to our coaching staff and the Dayton Basketball family. Nick brings a wealth of coaching experiences, strong regional connections, and a commitment to player development that make him a tremendous fit for our staff. He is deeply connected throughout the midwest and is legendary as a former Chicago ball player, high school, and AAU coach. His ability to identify and develop elite talent is well known and Flyer fans are personally familiar with his work having coached former Dayton standouts Kyle Davis and Josh Cunningham during their state championship high school runs. Nick's energy and passion will positively impact every facet of our program and community."

Irvin joins the Flyers after stints at Arizona State and Western Illinois following a historic career in the prep basketball scene in Chicago.

He spent 2022-26 in Tempe as a member of Bobby Hurley's Sun Devil coaching staff, starting as a special assistant to the head coach before being elevated to assistant. ASU won 67 games in Irvin's time there, knocking off six Top 25 opponents and making the NCAA Tournament once.

Irvin's two years at Western Illinois saw him lead the efforts to bring in the highest-rated recruiting class in program history. His final season with the Leathernecks started with a road win at Nebraska and ended with a 16-16 record. The 16 wins were the most by the Leathernecks since the 2012-13 season, with Irvin and company leading the program to a postseason appearance in The Basketball Classic Tournament.

Prior to his start at the collegiate level, Irvin was a prolific coach at Morgan Park High School in Chicago. He was the 2020 IBCA Coach of the Year to cap off a 12-year run as head coach at Morgan Park, where he went 301-70 and won four state championships (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018). While leading the Mustangs, Irvin mentored several all-state selections and became a fixture in the Chicago hoops scene. Three of his players at Morgan Park would garner All-American status, including Chicago Bulls 2021 NBA Draft pick Ayo Dosunmu.

Irvin and his family are a fixture in Chicago prep basketball, with his late father Mac sponsoring one of the top AAU programs in the country, the Mac Irvin Fire. He has coached over 20 players who went on to star at the Division I and professional level. This list includes Tim Hardaway Jr., Jalen Brunson, Jabari Parker, and a pair of former Flyers, Kyle Davis and Josh Cunningham.
