Khari Price’s importance to the Dayton basketball team during the 2012-13 season was best demonstrated by his absence. Sidelined six games with a deep thigh bruise, Price sat out while the Flyers went 2-4 with wins against two of the bottom teams in the A-10. The team’s top perimeter defender, Price played in 24 games in his first season at UD, averaging 2.9 points a game. He earned the team’s Best Defender Award.
Price’s speed and quickness on the defense end caused havoc for the opposing team’s top perimeter player. Price also showed that he is a very capable ball handler. He only had 20 turnovers in 439 minutes during the 2012-13 season. As one of the team’s primary ball handler’s, Price only averaged two turnovers per 40 minutes of play.
With the graduation of All-Atlantic 10 point guard, Kevin Dillard, Price will have to continue to improve his game if the Flyers are to be successful during the 2013-14 season.
2012-13
Khari Price played in 24 of the Flyers’ 31 games during the 2012-13 season. He missed the opening game due to a concussion and six games due to a deep thigh bruise. Overall, he played 439 minutes (18.3 mpg), scoring 68 points (2.8 ppg) and dished out 33 assists (1.4 apg). Price ranked third on the team with a .410 three-point percentage (16-of-39) and was also third in free throw percentage (.762, 16-of-21). He also had 11 steals and played relentless defense on the opposing players each game, which earned him the team’s Best Defender Award.
In the opening game of the Charleston Classic against Colorado, Price scored six points and had two steals. In the match-up against Northern Illinois, Price also scored six points and dished out three assists.
In the game vs. Florida Atlantic, Price scored three points, swiped a career-high four steals and dished out a career-high five assists. At VCU, he scored seven points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field and had two assists.
Price tallied a career-high 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting in the home match-up vs. Butler. He netted six points on 2-of-2 shooting against Fordham. At Charlotte, Price scored seven points on 2-of-2 shooting.
High School
Price became the second player on the team to join the Flyer family from the state of Louisiana when he signed last spring. When Price and teammate Matt Derenbecker take the court this upcoming season, they will be the first players from Louisiana to play for the Flyers.
Price is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound guard from Salmen High School in Sidell, La. Price averaged 18.2 points, 5.6 assists and 2.3 steals to lead Salmen to a 27-6 record his senior season. The Spartans advanced to the state quarterfinals, where they lost by one point to Neville. Salmen won the regional round of the state tournament behind a 28-point scoring effort by Price. The Second Team Class 4A All-Louisiana selection shot 42% from the field and 74% from the line as a senior. He was rated among the top 10 players in the state, regardless of classification, in 2011-12. Salmen also won two in-season basketball tournaments – the Skipper Classic in Mandeville, La. and the Hancock High School Tournament in Kiln, Miss. – and Price was named the MVP in both.
Price had a combined 113-19 record during his four-year varsity career. In 2010-11, the Spartans finished 32-4 and lost in overtime in the state semifinals. Price was a three-year starter and the sixth man on the 2009 Louisiana 4A State champions. As a junior, he averaged 14.9 points a game. Salmen is the same high school that Duke star Chris Duhon attended. Duhon has played the last eight seasons in the NBA with the Bulls, Knicks and Magic. Slidell, La. is located on the eastern edge of Lake Pontchartrain across the lake from New Orleans.
