Kevin Gilhuly joined the University of Dayton track and field staff as the throws coach in November of 2017.
Since joining the Flyers, he’s elevated the throws groups to elite status. Under his direction, the UD throws program boasts seven Atlantic 10 champions and 12 all-conference performers (in just three seasons - the 2019-20 outdoor and 2020-21 indoor track and field seasons were canceled due to COVID-19).
His throwers own nine spots on UD’s all-time Top 5 lists, including school records in shot put (outdoor) and javelin.
He coached the first-ever Dayton student-athlete to qualify for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Team Trials, Casey Bogues, who competed in javelin in 2021 at the trials. Gilhuly also coached UD volunteer assistant Chantae McMillan in javelin and helped her qualify for the 2021 Olympic Trials.
He coached Bogues to NCAA Second Team All-American honors after she threw a school-record mark of 53.39m at the NCAA National Championships. Bogues also earned USTFCCCA Collegiate All-Academic status and was crowned the 2021 Atlantic 10 Champion in javelin.
Jenni Rossi ’18 was a two-time Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Field Performer and owns the school record in outdoor shot put.
Lily Cook ’18 was the 2018 Atlantic 10 Outdoor champion in javelin and also an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier for Gilhuly.
Alyssa Ramstetter ’19 won A-10 gold in the hammer throw at the 2019 outdoor conference championships. Taylor Flight is a two-time all-conference performer, earning silver at the 2019 A-10 indoor championships and bronze at the 2020 A-10 indoor championships.
Gilhuly, a native of Wallingford, Conn., came to Dayton from Sacred Heart University. During his time at Sacred Heart, he helped his teams to the Northeast Conference Cross Country Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2015-2016 and in 2016-2017. He coached two qualifiers to the NCAA East Regional in hammer and in javelin. He was part of the 2016 and 2017 NEC Coaching Staff of the Year for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Prior to coaching at Sacred Heart, Gilhuly was at Southern Connecticut State University. There, he guided the men's and women's programs to the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championship, as well as a program-first Championship at NEICAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. While there, he produced NCAA Division II All-Americans in men's shot put, discus, and hammer, as well as 11 All-NEICAA honors.
He graduated from Monmouth University in 2013 with a B.A. and in 2014 with a M.S. He was named two-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team selection, a two-time NCAA Division I East Regional Qualifier in javelin, a 2nd-Team All-NEC honoree, and was a part of three Indoor and Outdoor Team Conference Championships. He was named team captain for both the 2013-14 indoor and outdoor seasons.
He holds multiple certifications within the USTFCCCA as a multi-event specialist and as a throwing event specialist. In addition he is certified through USA Weightlifting and is a USATF Level One Coach.
