Head coach Tim Horsmon announced the addition of volunteer assistant coach Timothy Balice on Jan. 22, 2014. He will be joining the Dayton staff after serving as head coach for two seasons at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with and learn under Coach Horsmon and the rest of the University of Dayton staff,” said Balice. “In the few days I have been able to spend on campus I can already tell how rich the volleyball community is as well as the community support for Flyer Volleyball - I really can't wait to get started in the gym!"

Balice will be involved with all day-to-day operations of the program, including handling all of the on-campus recruiting responsibilities and managing film exchange, scouting and technology. He will also be the team’s liaison for strength and conditioning and will be heavily involved in on-court training.

In two seasons at the helm of the KVCC program, Balice compiled an overall record of 36-28, including a 20-8 mark in Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) play. He led the Cougars to back-to-back conference tournament appearances as well as twice qualified for the NJCAA Regional Tournament. Under his tutelage, the Cougars had one All-American, one Regional Player of the Year, one Conference Freshman of the Year and eight All-MCCAA players.

In 2012, his squad finished ranked among the top 50 programs in the nation in kills/set, total attacks, digs, digs/set and all blocking categories. Following his second season, the Cougars finished 2013 ranked 10th nationally in digs/set and 29th in total digs. Balice’s teams also excelled in the classroom as the Cougars turned in a team GPA of 3.38, the highest of all KVCC athletic teams.

Previous to coming on board at KVCC as an assistant coach for the 2011 season, Balice coached at Heritage Christian Academy (2009-2011) located in Kalamazoo, Mich. He has also served as an assistant and head coach of several Dead Frog/FaR Out (DFFO) Volleyball Club squads. During his time at DFFO, Balice worked with over 50 athletes who have moved on to four-year institutions.

Balice received two bachelor of science degrees (exercise science and biomedical science) in December of 2010 from Western Michigan. He was a varsity student-athlete for WMU’s football program, starting his career as a walk-on and eventually earning a full athletic scholarship. During his time as a student-athlete at WMU, Balice played on the men's club volleyball team as a middle hitter (2005-2007) as well as the WMU club baseball team. Additionally, Balice coached the club women’s volleyball team at WMU 2010-14.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Balice is also very actively involved with DI volleyball on a camp level, having previously worked camps at Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, Northwestern and Western Michigan.

Balice is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health from Michigan State.
